Pull the inner trim panel from the inside to access the lock rods then you will be able to open the hatch by hand. I had one with the same problem a few years ago so I dont rember exactly what I did to make it work again, but it was a fairly simple alignment of the rods or the lever inside.
Good luck

I would like to know how to replace the entire hatch on a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

when you lift the hatch open up by the roof there are two hinges with three bolts to each hinge thats where it comes off depending on if its power you will need to unplug the harness and that is ran under the head liner not much involved in changing a rear hatch good luck

How do you release the rear liftgate latch on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It is unlocked but pulling the handle will not release the latch that holds it closed. It is not frozen or rusted?

Unlock the doors with the power unlock button then you have to push in on the bottom part of the plastic bezel that surrounds the liftgate handle, while at the same time pulling the liftgate handle outwards. It should open then.

My rear hatch is stuck closed on my 1995 jeep grand cherokee

Two problems with those are that the lock and latch assemblies rust up or the linkage rod between the handle and latch falls off. Best and easiest way in is to cut a hole into the plastic panel and reach in and pull the rod up. There is another way that requires drilling a small hole in the outside handle cover but most people opt for the other way. the panels are usually available very cheap at most junkyards. I use epoxy putty to hold the rod into the clip after re-attaching it because the clip itself is a poor design that fails easily.

My 1997 Grand Cherokee laredo has a problem with the rear hatch open/closed sensor; the ''brains'' frequently thinks the door is open when it is not. This is annoying when driving, leading to blinking...

the rear hatch issue is due to a faulty latch assembly or needs adjustment. replace that latch issue should be resolved. but u can access the wiring to it by removing the hatch panel and seperate the connector at the latch assembly , this should turn out the light, and also keep the alarm from going off!! hope that was helpful!!

I have a 97 Jeep Grande Cherokee, my rear hatch is close but I get an message telling me that rear hatch isn't close, in which it keeps my interior lights on and drains my battery

check the sensors and clean them with steel wool. the hatch may not be close to each other so check that as well you may have to loosen them up and tighten them again but try that first
