ALIGNMENT

Hood
The hood is provided with up-and-down and side-to-side adjustments.

  1. To make the side-to-side adjustments:
    1. Loosen the hood attaching bolts and move the hood to the proper position, then tighten the attaching bolts.
    2. Repeat the procedure if necessary.

  2. To make the up-and-down adjustment (at the rear of the hood):
    1. Loosen the hood stop bolts.
    2. Using a screwdriver, turn the hood stop screws clockwise to lower the hood and counterclockwise to raise the hood. Hood is at the proper height when it is flush with the fenders.
    3. Tighten the hood stop bolts.
    4. Repeat the procedure if necessary.

Hood Latch
See Figure 4
  1. Make sure that the hood is properly aligned.
  2. Remove the hood latch attaching bolts. Move them as necessary to align with the latch dowel. Tighten the attaching bolts.
  3. Remove the locknut on the hood latch dowel, and turn the dowel clockwise to pull the hood tighter and counterclockwise to loosen it. The proper height is when the top of the hood is flush with the fenders.
  4. Tighten the dowel locknut after the proper adjustment has been obtained.

How can i replace the hood lift supprt on a 1998 ford explorer?

This shows you how to take the hood off, the hinges, I am not sure how to replace those since my online resources doesn't cover that portion of body work. The diagram seems to show that the hinge goes into the firewall, so if you want you might have to cut into the firewall, but this is more of a salvage yard procedure.

I would look at the hood lift support more closely to see if you can indeed replace it.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Fig. 1: Exploded view of the hood-to-hinge mounting 85550005.gif
NOTE: It is highly recommended that you have at least one assistant helping during this operation.
  1. Open the hood.
  2. Matchmark the hood-to-hinge position.
  3. Disconnect any electrical wire harness plugs.
  4. Have you're assistant(s) support the weight of the hood.
  5. Remove the hood-to-hinge bolts and lift the hood off of the hinges.
  6. Installation is the reverse of the removal. Loosely install the hood and align the matchmarks. Tighten the bolts securely. Before removing the hood, matchmark the hood hinge to the hood 89680p03.jpg
If equipped, disconnect the hood light wire harness plug . . . 89680p04.jpg
    . . . along with any ground straps 89680p05.jpg
While an assistant holds the hood, remove the hinge-to-hood attaching bolts 89680p06.jpg

How do i replace the hood on my 2001 pontiac grand prix? it is the kind that lifts and supports itself by itself

You should get another person to help you, but it is very easy. Just have your helper on one side of the hood and remove the bolts that hold the hood to the support brackets on each side. Careful the hood does not slide down and damage the paint!
Re-installing should be simple also. I do not think there are adjustments. Just put the bolts in and carefully close the hood to be sure it lines up before slamming it shut.
Again, be careful it does not hit the fenders when installing.

I hope you found this helpful.
