You will need a mechanic to clear the codes with a computer, or disconnect the battery for a while and reconnect it. Make sure all electronics are off, ie stereo, before disconnecting. However if there is a problem with the transmission it will continue to go into limp mode until the problem is fixed.

Trans is in limp mode,

Go to an Autozone, Advance, or O'reilys for a scan. Limp home means engine problems too.

Overheating is a problem or loss of signal from an engine sensor. One thing you might try is after, and only after you get a scan is to wipe the memory.

The companion computer may have embedded info and is responding to the old "Limp signal".

Check any Vacuum lines or Vacuum dashpots which can affect powertrain controls.

2002 Impala: transmission limp mode...

Most transmissions have a limp mode, or limp-home mode.
If the driveline computer thinks there is something wrong, it can lock the transmission into one gear, such as 2nd gear. Usually reverse will also be available. The Impala automatic has 4 speeds. 2nd speed or gear will get you home, but the engine rpms can get a little high. I wouldn't get on the expressway will in limp mode.
Before taking to the shop, you might want to try and reset limp mode by turning the car off for a couple minutes, or you may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery.
