Most likely, it's a blown head gasket but, it could also be a cracked head or a cracked block. Get it fixed ASAP to prevent destroying all your motor bearings. Once the coolant gets into the oil, it's a race against time to get it fixed. The moisture will pit the bearing surfaces and that will destroy them.

Hi, if you have coolant going into the oil then their can be only one cause for this and that would be that the head gasket has failed, this is a big job to do and would involve removing the top half of the engine and replacing the gasket and the head bolts if needed it may also need the head pressure testing and maybe skimming without getting the head preasure tested you may find after changing the gasket you may still have the same problem so please get it pressure tested.
It is a big job and the head bolts need to be un-done in a certain order and the same when putting it back on also it will need tightening up to certain degrees and certain torque settings for every bolt failing to do this correctly would result in the cylinder head being warped.
If you have no experiance in doing head gaskets then leave it to a pro as its such a big job and you can get it horribly wrong as you need to make sure you get the timing spot on once you have put cylinder head back on getting this wrong would mean destroying your engine as the valves would smash the pistons meaning you then need to replace the engine.

Please leave to a garage if you have never done this before as it is a very big job, also its not a cheap job to pay a garage to do the parts ie the head gasket and head bolts are not that expensive but its the labour that costs the most.

If you are thinking of doing this yourself then make sure you get a repair manual (Haynes workshop manual are the best you can get) this will then guide you through the whole process step by step with pictures and it will give you the correct torque settings and order of doing things plus you need this to make sure you get the timing marks correct.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

1998 dodge dakota 1998 bad oil leak losing 5 quarts in a month . the oil is on alternator and all over cant find leak any suggestions where to look

Try cleaning the engine with degreaser and hose off the oil and muck. Let the engine dry out and then start the engine and look where the oil is leaking from.
From your description, the oil could be leaking from the tappet cover. May need a new gasket or the tappet cover bolts needs tightening.

Hi I traded a 92 Dodge Dakota with trans. problems for a 99 Ford Ranger that throws alot of smoke. Do you think it is the motor or cens. in the cat.

Your cat won't cause your vehicle to smoke, unless there is oil on it, then as the exhaust warms up, the cat will burn off the oil. Chances are, there is something wrong with your engine.

There are a few diagnostic steps you can make to see if you're burning oil, running rich, or have a leaking head gasket:

Check your plugs. If they've got oil or a filmy, soot-like deposit, you've got worn valve guide seals or worn rings, and you're burning oil, or you're running rich, indicative of other problems.

The exhaust "smoke" that you see, if it's like a white/gray cloud, could be steam from a leaking head gasket or water in the intake. If it's blue-ish, that's normally running rich. If it's black, you're probably burning oil.
