2002 freelander starter just clicks when the key is turned to the start position. Pulled the starter and had it checked, it is ok. Battery is good also, even connected another batter with it but made no difference.

My guess is the engine ground connection is poor. When you jump it the other vehicle makes a connection through the jump lead. When you go solo there is no ground to make your starter work. Test it by running a jump cable from the battery neg terminal to a good clean spot on the engine. If it fires up then check / clean the battery neg wire to engine terminals. By the way, never disconnect the battery while the engine is running, it will fry the alternator!!
Have the battery tested if no good replace. Check for power at the starter cable and then while someone holds the key in the crank position check for power at the trigger wire of the starter. If you have power but no crank or click then you may have a bid starter or the engine is seized. If no power on the tarter little wire which comes from the ignition switch make sure you fuses and relay is good and that your ignition switch is working. If the battery tests good have your alternator checked as well. The cluster may act erratic if battery is low or bad.
What you say does not make sense. Starter/solenoid works off the car, but only the solenoid works on the car? Is your ground wire from battery to engine loose? Both solenoid and starter use the same ground wire...?
Yes it could be your starter the fact that you hear the click tells you that the starter solenoid is in fact working. Do check your connections for looseness or corrosion prior to starter replacement and fix as needed. Possibly has a dead spot on the starter that won't allow starter motor to turn even though the solenoid engages.
Not sure what you had checked out at Autozone, but if you're not getting the engine to "turn over" and instead get starter "clicking" AND it works with a jumper... sounds like you need a battery. Get yourself a battery and make sure you get the proper battery size/type for your vehicle (do not use the info on the batter you have in vehicle now) Go to a place like Sams Club or Costco and have them look up your battery type. You might be surprised that that's all there is to it. Oh, one more thing... this could be a problem if you have loose or corroded battery connectors.
If the starter is just clicking, then it is not,but if the starter is kicking the starter drive out,and that is the noise you are hearing then it might be,turn the crank pulley with a socket and ratchet ,clock wise,if it turns then this is not the problem, make sure the ground to the engine is good,if the ground cable has gone bad, this will happen.
First, check Starter FUSE and RELAY, if they are OK!! Follow this direccions to find out if your starter is busted.
When you turn the ignition key to the START position, if it cranks up (turns over), your STARTER IS OK, if it makes a CLICKING SOUND, the battery is weak, when you HEAR ONLY ONE CLICK, the starter selenoid IS GOOD, the starter may be the problem.
check the battery under load at a local parts store. Sounds like a dead cell. Also check the cable connections to the battery for corrosion. The starter could be bad but That would be a last check unless it has been dragging. If the battery and connections are ok the starter solenoid would be the culprit. Sometimes you can free them with a light tap with a wrench or LIGHT tacking hammer. It will still need to be replaced, though. Hope this helps.
