You can test each spark plug, but disconnecting the wire as the engine is running. If it runs rougher, then that plug was good. If there's no change, then that plug may be bad. If it runs rougher, it could also mean the wire is bad.

To test the ignition coil (you may have one coil for each spark plug, or one for every two plugs, this part I am unsure of with your model) remove the wire from the plug and then remove the spark plug, then put the plug into the wire (DO THIS WITH THE CAR OFF). Start the car and while using INSULATED PLIERS touch the plug tip to a good ground spot such as the frame even the engine itself, but not to the battery. If there's a spark or crackling sound, then that coil is good.

You can test each wire by hooking it up to a voltmeter and setting the resistance to 20,000 OHM.
The reading will vary based on the length of wire. 12inch wire may register 6-7 while a 30inch wire may register 8-9. If it registers below 6 regardless of length, then the wire should be replaced.

I'm needing a diagram for the spark plugs

Here is the firing order and spark plug wire routing diagram for a 2006 Chevy Impala LT 3.9 V6:
Firing order: 1-2-3-4-5-6
Spark plug wire routing (starting from the driver's side):
  • Cylinder 1: connect to the coil tower closest to the driver's side headlight
  • Cylinder 3: connect to the coil tower next to cylinder 1
  • Cylinder 5: connect to the coil tower next to cylinder 3
  • Cylinder 2: connect to the coil tower closest to the passenger side headlight
  • Cylinder 4: connect to the coil tower next to cylinder 2
  • Cylinder 6: connect to the coil tower next to cylinder 4
Note: Make sure to route the wires properly to avoid cross-firing.

Spark plugs and wires

It sounds like the spark plug wires are not plugged into the correct place on the distrubutor. take the distributor cap off and crank the engine over. Make a note of which direction the rotor spins. (Clockwise, or Counterclockwise) then find the firing order for that engine. Sometimes the firing order is on the intake manifold. (if you tell me which engine it has, the 4 cylinder 2.0, or the 6 cylinder 2.5; I could post you the firing order). Now on the distributor cap there is one wire post that has the #1 on it, that would be where you put the spark plug wire from cylinder 1. Following the rotation of the distributor rotor, you would put the spark plug wire for the next cylinder in the firing order after the #1 wire, and so on.

1 cylinder misfiring.. what does that mean?

  • Hi, I can help.

  • A miss fire is when a cylinder does not fire off or fires poorly or at the wrong time. This can be a plug or plug/coil wire most of the time but not always.
  • Your engine is a 1.6 liter - 4 cylinder engine. One of them cylinder's is not firing as it should.
  • Did you get a scan and a P0 code that said cylinder misfire? List it here and I will gladly help you figure out what needs to be done to fix it.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

2000 NEON NOT FIRING ON THE #1 CILENDER

#1 cylinder not firing, check spark plug, spark plug wire, remove spark plug and use a compression tester, and check the compression of that cylinder. should have at least 65 pounds of compression per cylinder. If the compression is low, you may try shooting a little oil in to that cylinder, replace spark plug, and try running motor again. if the compression is low on said cylinder, could be due to bad piston rings. requiring a motor rebuild.

I hooked up the spark plug wires wrong on the distrator cap it is a 1988 4.3L 6cyl how can i find a diagram to fix this problem or tell me hoe to fix it

find the firing order which is usually on the intake manifold, put the crankshaft on 0 degrees top dead center, pull off the distributor cap and mark where the rotor button is pointing, start #1 cylinder at that spot(which that spot should be pointing towards the rear of the distributor),and # 1 cylinder is front of engine on the drivers side then it goes next 1 back #3 then # 5,and the passengers side front is #2, then #4,then #6 towards the back, and the firing order goes clockwise on the distributor.if it spits and sputters or back fires, then the timing firing order is off 180 degrees,so move every wire to the exact opposite on the cap,so your #1 plug wire will be opposite from where you put it first.then double check the firing order and all plug wires then try it.the firing order is:165432,i still dont know how to send pictures.
