If your engine is making the sound then eather the engine has been over reved and/or over heated and /or no oil changes. Its a sign that the engine will require a rebuild.Usually the noise is from a loose crankshaft or piston connecting rod bearing.Although taking the engine apart and checking it out is the only true way to find the problem.

Knocking? not ticking? drain your engine oil and drag a magnet through it. Look for metal that is gray or copper. Ouch, If you find anything, you have a rod bearing gone. It can be repaired if it hsn't hammered the rod or crand flat.

How to determine if engine knock sensor is bad on infinity @45?

The knock from pre-ignition is a high sharp tone. The knock from a rod bearing is lower. If the knock is audible at idle, it is likely a bearing since the timing is set by the ECU.

2000 grand cheroke 4.0 knocks loud at idle

You need a trained technician to listen to this, but it sounds like a connecting rod and or a crankshaft main bearing noise. I lean more towards the rod knock form a worn out bearing.

4.0 HO 6cyl 96 Cherokee Classic--loud, arrhythmic, knocking in park, under power sounds fine, also, a single knock occurs when I decelerate and go from park to drive, then fine under power. Pulled engine...

Oh Oh, better take that to a garage. When under power there is no knock but idling there is a knock? Sounds like a bearing on the crankshaft. To find out start and let it idle then disconnect and then reconnect the sparkplug wires one at a time. If the knocking stops, that cylinder is bad In any event it is bad news, rebuild or new engine

Engine knock

The idle issue is normal. The idle is controlled by the ECU. There are no adjustments for the idle. Regarding the knocking noise, that could be several things, and I am hesitant to comment without hearing it. Take it to a Toyota Dealer & have a tech listen to it. We are very good at identifying noises on the service drive.
