The guy was correct. Replacing a waterpump has absolutely nothing to do with the timing.
I believe the 4 cyl. water pump is driven off off the tming chain and is about a six hour job. It involves removing the timing chain cover and exhaust manifold. The V6 would be a a simple serpentine belt removal and replace the pump about an hour job.
