The guy was correct. Replacing a waterpump has absolutely nothing to do with the timing.

I believe the 4 cyl. water pump is driven off off the tming chain and is about a six hour job. It involves removing the timing chain cover and exhaust manifold. The V6 would be a a simple serpentine belt removal and replace the pump about an hour job.

Oil all over the undercarraige... looks like a starter next to where the oil's coming from. It's a 2003 Alero front wheel drive, 4 cylinder. Is the main seal as close the the starter as it looks?

http://www.carcomplaints.com/Oldsmobile/Alero/2001/engine/turns_over_but_wont_start.shtml

I don't think it is the main seal, it sounds more like the power steering pump. Are any of the reservoirs up top empty? Coolant? Brake fluid? Rocker cover gasket leaking>? Did you check the oil? Check this stuff out, and sorry to have to show you the web site. But , you would not believe the complaints. Hope this helps.

The water pump is leaking in my 2003 Oldsmobile alero

If your water pump is leaking, then it will have to be replaced. This is not a job for the beginner as you will have to rmove the timing chain cover, harmonic balancer and timing chain. If you tackle this job your self make sure you mark your valve gears, crank and replace the chain exactly the way you removed it or your timing will be off.
