This is a great car but I has a few crazy lil things that are a pain. The sending unit in the gas tank needs to be replaced there is a polarity issue with it. Here's the kicker the fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit are made as one piece so you must replace both. see http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/DPH0/FG0115.oap?year=1999&make=Pontiac&model=Sunfire&vi=1357174&partType=C0401&parentPartType=C0025

Testimonial: "Hey thanks! You were 100% correct I just had the fuel pump replaced.although I thought it odd at 49000 miles for it to be bad?"

My friend;
Try this;

    1. Check all fuses & relays in the cabin & engine compartment fuses / relays boxes, And insert same valued fuse i.e. { fuse rated 15APS with same fuse, etc. }.
    2. Check fuel pump / float assy. especially the floate it self at fuel tank
    3. Check OP'S & voltage of the Alternator = 13.7 V DC - 14.8 V DC MAX.

Ok so had to replace the motor in my 99 Sunfire just got it back 2 days ago, started it up this AM and the dashboard went crazy , check engine light, gas gage was like it was possessed, everything wen

Of course it does. All the grounds and positive wires had to be disconnected. ALL of them have to go back and be secure. Sounds to me you have ground issues. Could also be pinched wires. (between the engine and transmission) Been there done that.

Whining when I give it gas, hen goes away before it seems to get to 3rd auto. gear

Try this have your transmission fluid and filter changed if you have not had it done in over 50,000 miles. Whining is a indicator that the fluid is getting dirty.

My best response to this could be a defective transmission sensor. which is pretty hard to pin point the right sensor due to how many sensors they are in the transmission.
I would recommended taking the car to a few mechanic shop and compare they ideas on the problem.

Are you low on gas? It means something isn't reading within spec on the gauges.

2005 sunfire gauges all wacked out

All these gauges are controlled by a fuse, start there first, if they are blow just replace them, you should find all necessary info in your manual that came with the car when you bought it new.

My 2001 honda crv is about 50,000 miles. what maintenance service do you recommend?

50,000 miles then all its needed is the oil changed. One thing though, the automatic transmissions on honda's don't last as long as the engines. They seem to last about 120,000 miles on most newer hondas. The manual transmissions are bulletproof though. Other than a clutch every 150,000 miles or so a manual transmission accord will run much longer than the body will last if its driven normally.

After driving a couple of miles, all the whistles

Have your altenator checked. If your battery isn't being charged up enough from a faulty altenator the low voltage will make your car go CRAZY!
Best thing to do is buy a Haynes or Clinton's repair shop manual at your local AP store for your particular vehicle. Then read up on it in the trouble shooting section or the step by step RR section. You can purchase these at your local Auto Parts store or buy them on line at ebay burdfrenzy
