Lock Cylinder Housing
Removal Rotate ignition switch to RUN position. Using a 1/8-inch drift, press lock cylinder retaining pin through access hole and remove ignition switch .
CAUTION: Carefully note the position of the steering column upper bearing retainer (3C610) prior to removal. Remove blue plastic steering column upper bearing retainer by inserting a screwdriver or similar tool, with a 90 degree bend on the tip, between steering column upper bearing retainer and steering column lock housing bearing (3E700) and by prying upward.
Insert tip of a screwdriver into Double-D slot of steering column lock housing bearing , then rotate 90 degrees. Remove steering column lock housing bearing (stamped steel).
Remove steering column lock gear (3E717) . Carefully note relationship of steering column lock gear to position of rack teeth.
Installation Position steering column lock gear in base of lock cylinder housing in the same position as that noted during removal procedure. The position of steering column lock gear is correct if last tooth on steering column lock gear is meshed with last tooth on rack.

Press blue plastic steering column upper bearing retainer into lock cylinder housing . Ensure steering column upper bearing retainer is in its original position.
Line up flats of steering column lock gear with flats of washer by pulling down on the steering column lock cam (3E695) .
Install ignition switch .
Check for proper start in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also, check to ensure start circuit cannot be actuated in DRIVE or REVERSE positions and the steering column tube is locked in LOCK position.

SOURCE: A4 steering lock does not engage and car won't turn over
The steering locks don't necessarily engage when the key is removed, I always turn the wheel before exiting to engage it. There are several positions that will allow the pin to lock in but if between these, it may seem that it isn't locked.

Hi,
When you say you were able to remove it - does this mean the broken part of the key? if it was, then just take both pieces to a locksmith that cuts auto keys, and have a replacement cut. If it uses a transponder, make sure this is copied also.
With a working key, remove any plastic surround around the lock mechanism (put the steering wheel back on), and look at the lock mechanism around the actual lock. Turn the key to position 1. This should allow a small pin on the side of the lock body to be pressed in - releasing the lock cylinder, which will come out on the key when you pull it.
These are some makes where you have to drill to depress the catch, but this is a hands-on job for an auto locksmith.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for using Fixya.
SOURCE: ignition cylinder won't turn
I had the same problem in a 94' trooper. Basically the Ignition lock cylinder is wore out and you need a new one. Mine wouldn't turn past lock and no matter what I tried it wouldn't turn. You can go on auto zone and find the part, mine was about 61 bucks, it comes with keys and the ignition cylinder. The deal is that to get your new ignition cylinder in you have to get your original turned to off or acc I can't remember. You'll see with your new ignition cylinder that when you turn the key there is a button that can be depressed but only when the key is turned past lock and it also won't depress in start. First, disconnect battery and wait like 30 minutes. So, what you do is take a screwdriver handle and place it up against key and take some pliers or something and beat on it a couple of times, this gets the key in deep enough to where you can eventually turn it. I swear it will eventually turn, once there, take off the top and bottom plastic covers off steering wheel/unscrew electrical wires on back of ignition cylider and other side and you know the button I referred to basically you have to depress that with key in acc or off and it will slide out. If your having trouble finding the button look at new ignition cylinder in comparison to old one and you can see where the depressed button is on side closest to you, you'll see a little hole up on the side of housing that you can depress.

I do not have the car here to look, I am doing the job for a friend and just trying to gather as much info about the job. It does not mention anything about taking off the Steering Wheel, but does get Technical about the Steering Column Lock gear/Bearing? This is all accessed thru the key lock cylinder/removal?
When I looked at the car the other day, I did not notice if any Shroud is removable from the Steering column. Thanks for your help!
