I have recently bought a BMW 318iSE (1999). Yesterday, the engine warning light came on when pulling off the motorway. The engine now idles erratically (600-800rpm) and the oil light flickers on when ticking over. The oil light goes off when you increase the revs above 900rpm. I have checked the oil. The oil is clear and the level is fine as I done a oil change 3 days ago. The manual describing the warning light states: '' Exhaust emission values have deteriorated'' Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? I would assume this to be either the lamba sensor or problem with the exhaust system. I would also guess that the oil light is flickering due to the oil pump pressure being low (due to the low idling of the revs). Please can anyone advise?
That sounds like you bought big problems. Oil ights indicate low oil pressure= BIG BUCKS. I would have a qualified repair shop check it out, A shop that specializes in BMW. If you are lucky, maybe the oil sender is just bad. They can also check out the Ck eng light. But the oil light is priority one.

The problem was the vent valve and breather hoses towards the rear of the engine. The engine light cleared itself after around 50-100miles.
