If there is a problem with the crankshaft sensor then when you attempt to start it the ecm cannot confirm when number one cylinder is on top-dead-center thus not activate the 'open loop' part of the engine controller. I think the reason that it was running fine then would not start was because the only time the crankshaft sensor is used is when starting, not after while in closed loop.

I have fault codes P1684 & P0340 on my 2002

P1684 The battery has been disconnected within the last 50 starts.

P0340

This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.
Symptoms Symptoms can include:
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Rough running / misfiring
  • Loss of engine power
Causes A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  • the camshaft position sensor may have failed
  • the PCM may have failed
  • there exists an open circuit
  • the crankshaft position sensor may have failed
Possible Solutions With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
  • Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
  • Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
  • Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
  • Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
  • Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
  • Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

Changed crankshaft sensor, started fine & test drive ok. sat for 3-4 hrs & would not start check engine light on with fault code 340

That code, 340 is No camshaft signal being received by the computer. Might just be the CAMshaft sensor, not the CRANKshaft sensor, that's bad.

I CAN´T START MY VOLVO 850 STATE WAGON 1994. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON.THE FUEL PUMP IS WORKING RIGHT.I CHANGED THE IGNITION COIL BUT STEEL WONT START.THE SPARK PLUGS ARE KNEW.THE BATTERY IS FINE. I...

It may well be a camshaft sensor at fault. The camshaft sensor is part of the 'ignition timing' system and works in conjunction with the ignition packs (or coil). The camshaft sensor is a common item to fail. However, before you rush off and buy a new one, be aware that there are other sensors on the Volvo. And Volvo parts aren't cheap. There's a crankshaft sensor and cold start sensor too ... Best bet is to get a mobile mechanic who has the necessary electronic equipment to connect to the car's ecu (computer). This will usually give an error code which indicates what unit is faulty. You can always change the parts yourself. Don't be tempted to change one part after another in the hope that the car will start. It'll work out more expensive in the long run. Pay to get it checked professionally and do the work yourself.

Wont start

You need to replace your camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor at the same time. The parts around $60 bucks together. The camshaft senors sets on the side of the engine and the crankshaft sensor sets in the rear of the engine above the oil filter. Also, check the wire harnes to both sensors they have a problem with shorting out. Make sure you tune your car up with new spk plugs, spk plug wires, and coil. The PT Cruiser is a good car ,but the sensors **** and need to be replaced often. With this car you must stay up on your maintenance. I have one with 150,000 miles and it runs like new. You can turn the key on/off, on/off,on/off, and it will give you the problem codes. Do this quikly and write them down for the mechanic. To reset your computer take off the negative battery post for about 15min and reconnect, continue to post any problems and solutions with this car. The problem code will appear in the odometer box...........runjoe
