96 Plymouth grand voyager instrument cluster inoperative, transmission intermittently won't up-shift. Suspect BCM, any feedback?
The cluster problem is a common and will not give you a fault code! Drive your van to Autozone and have them connect their free scan tool to download any fault codes. Transmission shift problems are often linked to the Transmission solenoid which displays a fault code. They are easy to replace (3 screws) and disconnect the sensor connector... the key is to be clean and use a safety razor blade to remove all the old gasket off. Some gasket material will undoubtedly fall into the numerous channels inside the lower housing. I used interconnecting straws and sucked them all clean one at a time...quickly putting my finger over the end the straw each time so as not to allow them to fall or suck the fluid into my mouth! Go slow! Pre-cleaning the entire area with Simple Green and an old tooth brush before removal really made the job much, much cleaner. Keep a rag handy just off the solenoid to allow the gasket residue and transmission fluid to fall onto from the straws.
These vans have had issues with the PIN connections to the instrument clusters. With time the solder on the main PIN connection will begin to fail. The good news this may be repaired at home. First you'll need to remove the instruments. To do so remove the dash components from around the instruments then the (4) screws) that hold the instruments in place. Carefully detach the wire connection from the back of it; take to a well lit area. Look for a PIN with a failed solder joint (this will appear as a slight black or grey circle. If found apply heat and let solder begin to flow; the allow to cool and reassemble. If you look at my history you'll see I've helped others with this issue. As for the transmission I expect this a seperate issue, possibly the BCM but I'd like to review further.
Please let me know if this assisted you,
Tom
