This happened all of a sudden, My 1998 Lincoln Continental turns on fine, but when I change gears from Park to anything else (except Neutral), the car stalls out. Also if it doesnt stall out, the car would drive good at high speed but once I brake or stop at a light it bounces (almost like a standard car). I just put dry gas in because I heard it could help. Does anyone know whats wrong and how I can fix it?

Transmission/Gear Issues I have a 01 Lincoln Continental... I have about 172k miles on it and having issues with it going into 3rd gear. Goes through 1st and 2nd fine but as it goes in to third it feels...

You have too much fluid in the transmission. Park on level ground. After a 15 min drive. Leave engine running. Set parking brake. Transmssion in neutral. Check tranny fluid. A cup or more over will cause this. Better to have less than too much. Drain at least a full 1 leter bottle. Go for drive check it again. As above.

Make sure you have brake lights. This is were the shifter solenoid gets it's signal from to get it out of gear.
One thing you can try is turn the igntion switch towards the run postion stopping just short of activating the electronics. Then try and move shifter to neutral then you can start it and out it into gear so you can drive it to get it fixed.

1998 Lincoln will not shift out of park

Tom:

If this is the case you should be able to get it out of park so he can get it somewhere to get it fixed. He can turn the igntion switch on but stop just short of activating the electronics, then he should be able to get it from park to neutral so he can start it and drive it.
