I have a Nissan RB30 engine - blown head gasket

I have a Nissan RB30 engine - same as the VL Commodore (donated to school workshop for students to work on) on an engine stand. It has a blown head gasket, the oil is very milky. Is there a workshop manual or at least the engine section of a manual to help us put it back together again soon? One of the students wants to drop it into his VK Commodore and turbo charge it. Will it fit? He will have all sorts of compliance probs to get street legal (Qld, Australia), won't he?

The engine procedure will be found in the workshop manual for the nissan vehicle that uses that engine so nay nissan manual will be ok for the engine
taking that it is a v6 engine , problems he will encounter will be mating it to the transmission but that can be overcome by using a suitable transmission
as it is a v6 ( assumption ) and commodores run v 6 engines as oem equipment there will be no compliance problems for the engine swap ( regardless if it is not a v6 , engine for engine configuration is allowed but v8 for straight 6 or 4 or v6 comes in question )
however as to adding a turbo to the engine , that will only require an engineering ,modification plate to be attached to the vehicle and most speed shops have access to that inspection data
It will be best if a full overhaul is done on th engine as water in the sump is not always head gasket but corrosion holes behind the water pump impeller or leaking head studs threads that go into the water jackets

SOURCE: can i fit a turbo skyline engine (rb30) in a nissan sentra 1987

Hi,

Thanks for using FixYa.

The answer is... Yes you can... All it requires is patience and skills. You'd need to squeeze the engine in your car. This might require you to cut some chassis parts in your engine bay just to accommodate such big and powerful engine. Best wishes with the engine swap buddy.

Thanks. Have a good one.

Blown head gasket

Well it would really depend on the condition of your engine.
It would take more labor to repair your engine than it would to just replace it. But unless the engine is very damaged it should be cheaper to have your engine fixed. And replacing the head gasket and having the head repaired should be under the price you were given. A head gasket set for a 4 cyl engine is around $100 wholesale.
I would call around and check with other shops next.

if the engine runs good. I would just replace the head gasket, but that is really up to you. it would be a whole lot cheaper if you had a independant mechanic do the head gasket on the vehicle. have a good day !!

Hello

Are you want to take revenge. Let me know if you are.

I am not expertise in solving case for Car.

Sorry, My mistake, I take it in wrong. I think you are expertise in Computer and Hardware, So I had asked the question from you.

  • ABOUT: VL Commodore... good looking car.
1 First generation (1978–1988)
  • 1.1 VB
  • 1.2 VC
  • 1.3 VH
  • 1.4 VK
  • 1.5 VL
2 Second generation (1988–1997)
  • 2.1 VN
  • 2.2 VP
  • 2.3 VR
  • 2.4 VS
3 Third generation (1997–2006)
  • 3.1 VT
  • 3.2 VX
  • 3.3 VY
  • 3.4 VZ
4 Fourth generation (2006–present)
  • 4.1 VE

In my opinion your car is around 1978 make.

A Brief Introduction of VL Commodore:
Marking a high point in terms of sales, the last-of-the-series VL Commodore sold in record numbers, finally managing to outsell the Ford Falcon in the private sector. The 1986 VL represented a substantial makeover of the VK and would be the last of the mid-size Commodores. Designers distanced the Commodore further away from its Opel origins, by smoothing the lines of the outer body and incorporating a subtle tail spoiler. A thorough redesign of the nose saw the Commodore gain sleek, narrow headlamps and a shallower grille, while the Calais specification employed unique partially concealed headlamps.

By this stage, Holden’s 30 year old six-cylinder was thoroughly outmoded and would have been difficult to re-engineer to comply with pending emission standards and the introduction of unleaded fuel. This led Holden to sign a deal with Nissan to import their RB30E engine. This seemed a good idea in 1983 when the Australian dollar was strong; however by 1986 the once viable prospect became rather expensive. The public quickly accepted what was at first a controversial move, as reports emerged of the improvements in refinement, 33 percent gain in power and 15 percent better economy. An optional turbocharger appeared six months later and lifted power output to 150 kilowatts (200 hp). In October 1986, an unleaded edition of Holden’s carburettored V8 engine was publicised. Holden had originally planned to discontinue the V8 to spare the engineering expense of converting to unleaded. However, public outcry persuaded them to relent. VLs in New Zealand were also available with the 2.0 litre six-cylinder RB20E engine.
Negative points:

The VL suffered from some common build quality problems, such as poor windshield sealing, that can lead to water leakages and corrosion. Awkward packaging under the low bonnet meant the six-cylinder engine was especially susceptible to cracked cylinder heads, a problem not displayed on the Nissan Skyline with which it shares the RB30 engine. The Used Car Safety Ratings, published in 2007 by the Monash University Accident Research Centre, found that first generation Commodores (VB–VL) provide a "worse than average" level of occupant safety protection in the event of an accident.

I think it is sufficient information, as per your question.

Let me know if you wish to know more about your Car. (:P)

Best of Luck & Regards
ELLIN
