M.Bradbury 31.10.09 2004 Nissan xtrail tspec auto. gear shift stuck in park, have to use shift release button. Was told by Nissan that it is an ignition barrel fault i.e. worn so needs new ignition barrel costing over £700!!!!! What has the ignition barrel got to do with the gear shift?? and has anyone solved the same problem??

The gear shift electrical relay or module inside it is not reading the signal to release. You need to have the electronic relay or module repaired or the gear shift assembly replaced.

I think your brake shift interlock solenoid is not releasing the Park position when you apply the brake.

Check for a blown fuse first. see owner manual for location of fuse.

Also, check owner manual for how to manually bypass the interlock.

When you step on the brake pedal, it activates a solenoid that unlocks the shift linkage cable so it will move. It is a safety feature to ensure you have you foot on the brake and not the gas, as you shift out of park.

arent you supposed to push tthe button to release it anyway?

When you turn ignition on it releases a cable that is attached to the shifter also the shifter has a solenoid attached to it that is released when you step on the brake. Both times that I had the problem of button stuck and cant shift out of park the solenoid was sticking and wouldnt release .
