I'm assuming the heater core is partially plugged, the heat is inadequate and I want heat this winter.

I'm assuming the heater core is plugged, I want to drain the system. is it best to use a "T" fitting and which hose is best to cut into if i go that route

  • gheiar Oct 30, 2009

Thanks..will a t fitting accomplish the same, rather than digging for those hard to reach hoses on the firewall.

  • gheiar Oct 30, 2009

Thanks. I feel better now about the process. Thank you.

Is the cooling system rusty? there are more than a few reasons for this, the 1st is a stuck open engine thermostat, the engine fails to heat up, this reduces the heat, but to clear the core, remove the hoses carefully at the heater nipples on the firewall in the engine compartment, then use a garden hose to flush it 1st one direction and then reverse to the other hose, that weill clear it.

don't cut any hose! just remove them from the core nipples at the firewall. you need not drain the coolant, u will only loose a small amount

High pressure washer and flush kit

  • Anonymous Oct 30, 2009

heater cores do wear out. Or they get dirty. Cleaning can help but you are better off getting a new one. Save some trouble seriously. I've been a mechanic for 8+ years. I've seen people take them out, clean them, flush entire system, put back together and car ran same exact way.

you will have to use the clamps that hold them on. Plastic fittings to heatcore are plastic. They do break easily. Also you will probably have to access the rest from under the dash panel.

The PCM is located in the cowl area in front of the passenger side of the windshield. There is no ECM on this car. The PCM controls engine and transmission functions.

How to install a new heater ore for a 2002 saturn sl

It's a long 7-10 hour job.

Have to remove the dashboard

then remove hoses to heater core
then remove wires going to heater core circuit board
then remove heater core
replace it and put everything back together without messing anything under your dashboard.

Mechanics charge between $700 to $1000 to replace one.

If the core is not leaking (wet passenger side floor) you may want to try a reverse flush before touching anything, remove the 2 hoses in the engine compartment at the firewall leading to the heater core and with a garden hose flood the heater core connector until it the water is clear then do the other connector.

If that don't work and your not sure you can do the replacement correctly don't do it.

Flush heater core on 2000 grand cherokee

If it's clogged it can be cleared with the use of Garden hose pump. The water has to be turn into the heater hose line and then water has to be removed out via the pump.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL2. I have no heat. We have replaced the thermostat, the water pump and flushed the system. Still no heat! What's next..replacing the heater core or power flushing? If its...

It is your heater core, there is nothing else left.

The heater housing is usually under the dash, and it must be removed to gain access to the heater core.Procedures for removing a dash, and heater core vary. But for the core:
The heater housing must be removed, and then you
"remove the panels" or "split the case"1c3d50c.gif (Usually screwed together.)
Remove the coolant hoses, the cable and vacuum control line.
Remove the heater core bracket and clamps.
To install the new heater core, reverse the removal steps.
Core leaks **** because of the core's location deep within the firewall/ dashboard of the car.
So remember to liquid test your new one before you put it back in, or you could be sorry.
