IF you have also changed the filter then add 4.5 litres of oil and check level after running engine for 20 seconds or so. Top up as needed.

85% of the diesel engine problem is the fuel system. and rest 15%, if met, is a major problem. you have to check the filter. and make the fuel line solid. means no air in the system.

Is it a diesel or petrol motor? If it is Diesel or petrol then black smoke is a sign that it is using excessive fuel so it could be a blocked air filter or fuel filter. if it is a diesel motor. So check these 2 items first.
The low oil level light is on because the engine needs the oil topped up, if you fill it to the correct level this will make the oil level light switch off. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

to maintain just do the normal services, oil changes, filter changes, i heard mixed reveiws on the engine, some have major bearing problems with the engine and other love it,if its due to lack of maintinace i wont know,but its the problem, the bearings. also i dont know what year yours is but the engine i speak of is the 1n diesel. good luck i always say preventive maintenance goes a long way.a good diesel engine should go 200 to300,000 miles,

If the car is diesel, then it meands that the diesel fuel filter sedimenter has filled up with water (the filter separates water from the diesel),anyway there is a plastic tap under the filter, unscrew this and let the water out, then pump the black button at the top of the filter to reprime the filter,(also see your user manual that came with the car for explanation) cheers

Exactly 11 quarts of oil. That is a lot ; make sure you replace the oil filter , too, clean the air filter and replace the dieselfilter every 10 K km.
