Describe your 1996 dodge ram 2500 transmission Problem Automatic Transmission has started acting flaky. When in Drive, it will shift through first and second gear normally, but does not go into third or overdrive. Initially I could bump up in to neutral, then back down into drive and it would shift normally for a while. Last time I tried to drive it did not shift above second (acted like it did shift but was more like no gear - neutral). I'm going to try changing fluid/filter before I shott the truck. Any ideas?
Well, first do the service. Pull the pan down and look for metal shavings. If there is metal shavings your in for a transmission. If not, you may have a problem with one of the transmissions shift solenoids located near the valve body.
P.S. The Duramax has the Allison 1000 transmission not the dodge cummins and they are one of the best trannys on the market.
The front clutch seals are worn to the point where the piston bleeds fluid and wont apply third or over drive.
First it's not an Alison transmition! If it were you would not be here. I will say you should try draining and replacing your fluid, and if that does not help get you bands tightened and a check done by a professional. I will say I am no expert but I am also not a novice mechanic and will say I have 128,000 miles on my '96 Ram 2500 V10 and have not had a problem. (knock on wood) Also don't listen to reviews with miss spellings, you don't need an uneducated redneck telling you the wrong thing. Good luck with your truck!
My 1996 dodge ram turning over good but it wont start could it be a gas problem or a electrical
Dont buy a dodge with an auto tranny. The allisons in them are all forged aluminum, even the spider gears therefor making them very prone to this problem.
