Hi Tom...I would say it is a burning odor as opposed to a sweet smell... i wanted to add this is only happening intermittenly...thanks, Cindy

Does the smoke have an odor? If so does it smell somewhat sweet? or more of a burning odor such as oil, rubber or such. Thanks, Tom

Smoke under hood from drivers side

Possible spilt oil on exhaust manifold. Open hood, check oil level , make sure its full and take vehicle back to where you had the oil change done and have them recheck everything to make sure all is tight . And ask them to please clean any mess or spill they may have caused.

1996 jeep Cherokee country 130k miles recently had oil filter changed and broke the oil sensor gauge...had them replace gauge sensor causing the new filter to be reinstalled. Several weeks later after two...

There is either A).an oil leak or B). the smoke is from residue oil spilled on exhaust and such during the repair. Crank the engine and look everywhere for an evident oil leak if one is not found leave it run till it gets hot enough to show where the white smoke is coming from and see then if it is residue or a new leak. My mazda 626 has a strong potent smell coming from the exhaust

You don't mention what that smell is reminiscent of?

You don't mention the colour of the "smoke" and you didn't say whether the engine is petrol or diesel?

You don't mention whether the road behaviour/performance is normal?

White smoke is almost always steam or in the case of a diesel it could be an unburned fuel mist, grey/black is excess fuel and blue or grey/blue is burning oil.

Some steam is fairly normal until the engine and exhaust system is hot but excessive amounts could be one symptom of head gasket trouble. If the engine is drinking coolant and sending it through the exhaust as steam it will sometimes smell spicy.

Burning oil smells a bit like burned eggs in the frying pan.

If the car hasn't ultra-low sulphur oil and fuel the catalytic converter will convert sulphur traces into hydrogen sulphide - the bad egg gas...

1997 jeep cherokee country white smoke under hood, runs good, does not run hot

Interesting.
White smoke is usually burning coolant.
You should be loosing a fluid, something has to be burning to make the smoke.
It could be a very slight drip onto the hot exhaust manifold or pipe if it is only happening from under the hood.

2001 s10 did not overheat but lost power, coasted to stop, white smoke from tailpipe and engine. What could this be?

The white smoke is probably steam caused by coolant getting into the cylinder(s) either from a faulty head gasket, cracked cylinder head or cracked engine block. The loss of heat from the heater indicated that coolant was being lost..

Heard a grinding sound under hood. Car then died.

So does the a/c still work, maybe your compressor is bad? Top off your oil and run the engine and see if you can find out where the oil came from?

Temp gauge reaches red line and smoke/steam from under hood, but no leaks of any kind. This after recent oil change and thermostat install.

Something is wrong. What does the steam smell like? Oil or antifreeze?
Look closely for coolant seeping onto something hot and vaporizing, if that's what you smell.
Check your coolant level and oil to verify if you may have a leak.
