Re: 1997 vw jetta tdi put in gear but does not move as if...
Sounds like the clutch has perished! possibly the thrust bearing, simply replace the clutch!
one thought... take a look at the clutch cable to see if this has not broken or come off it's housing on the gearbox!

something wrong with flywheel and its a big expensive job as it has one of these rubber jointed flywheels ,now their is a replacement kit that comes with a proper flywheel but it about 700 euros ,what i often do is strip it out then weld it together with a arc welder and hope and pray to whoever happens to be listerning at the time that i have the balance right .or it shakes the car apart
It is probably the clutch slave cylender, leaking fluid, add brake fluid and bleed the system and check for leaks then replace whatever is leaking, sometimes it leaks onto the floor of the car under the pedal.
I have the same problem with my 2001 volkswagen cabrio, but I know the solution.
You need a new clutch, or it will continue to slip.
If you cannot afford the clutch. You can "baby" the clutch by easing the clutch out, and eventually it will catch. (It should catch in a second or two.)
Jetta TDI manual from 1998 was always going with 5 gear speed and with hudraulic clutch. First off all make shure that you don't have any air in this hydraulic. After you are shure that pushing pedal is effective you may think about changing your clutch set. Depending what engine do you have 1Z,ALH or AFN there're diferent clucthes and prices
