My newish car indicators work when I indicate to the left or right, but the self cancelling doesn't always cancel the indicator when I have straightened up. It has almost caused some accidents as I assumed that the indicator had switched off after I had carried out the turn. With my previous cars this problem was never experienced. It is an old problem which I had assumed was rectified however when I took the car to a deaker they said that the indicators are working properly. But how can they be working properly if they don't switch off properly. Does the law state anywhere that car indicators must self cancel after their operation or not. I consider this to be extremely dangerous and I don't believe cars should be sold if their controls do not function properly. What do you think? Paul Honey

requires taking off steering check 2 lugs at rear of switch are intact and the that the single center lug that engages left turn or right turn is intact and hasnt broken off or is misaligned.
I would check that you have the correct bulbs fitted in the indicators, especially the rear ones as it is common for people to fit the wrong bulbs, which could be single contact single filament, or double contact single filament, or double contact double filament. There are quite a lot of bulbs that will fit in the same size holder but might not be right for the car. Other than that you will have to look for wires that are shorting out, also probably in the boot. Unfortunately when you purchase a Renault car, wiring problems are built in, apart from bits of plastic you will undoubtedly find on the floor and never find where they came from.
Does the auto-cancellation not work after the steering wheel returns to the home position? If not, you may need to replace the column switch gear, or check if the auto-cancellation mechanism is working.
More than likely the control arm return mechanism has failed. The more systems it controls the more tricky it can be to replace but very doable. Remember to always disconnect the battery and wait at least 20 min so the airbag system can discharge. Any time your working close to airbags do this, especially in the console. You can get a new control easily online. But hey try a little wd 40 or something similar first. But usually it's a bad connection or the mechanism which releases it when the steering wheel changes opposite direction causing it to disengage. But it the actual lights are working correctly just not returning to the off position most likely this is your issue.
Your turn signal switch is most probably faulty. You will need to replace it. Please, check the videos below. The first video shows a similar problem on a Renault Clio. The second one shows the operations to replace the turn signal switch. I think that the operations are quite similar in most modern cars. Good luck!
I had the same problem. Horn not working and indicators not self cancelling.
After removing the steering wheel I found that the central two pronged
collet, that engages with the steering wheel and drives the horn contact
slipring and indicator cancellation, had worn down its prongs. this had
caused the horn wires to stop rotating and they had been snapped by the
motion of the steering wheel.
the ideal solution would be to replace the collet and horn wires but I managed to repair both
