The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

Cannot fully insert replacement ignition lock cylinder , it is identical to original, 2005 tundra

From memory, all ignition locks have a small catch to make removal difficult. There is a small hole you have to press a paper clip or similar into it to release the catch.

Videos on replacing ignition cylinder in 1984 ford f-150

you don't need a video //// on the bottom of the plastic shroud that covers the steering column you will see a hole & inside is a shiny metal button if you don't have the keys you must drill out that button then you will be able to twist the lock cylinder forward to remove it make sure the battery has been disconnected before you rotate the cylinder because the truck will start////// to replace the cylinder you must put the key in the new one and rotate it so the tip fits into the shaped hole in the column also the steps on the outside of the cylinder must fit into place then you can turn it back and the cylinder will lock itself in when the shiny button has popped into place
videos-replacing-ignition-cylinder-in-42o0qgjjziyiibo4vnuvn3h3-5-0.jpg
the tip you see here above ^ and the steps on the side
videos-replacing-ignition-cylinder-in-42o0qgjjziyiibo4vnuvn3h3-5-2.jpg
now you should understand that's the button you drilled out on top that locks the cylinder in the bottom of the column have fun it won't take to long or be to hard to do but that button will not let go till it is drilled past the hole in the column o.k. so get a nice sharp and greased bit for cooling and rip it up

The car will turn over but won`t start but if I turn the key on and jump the starter it starts

Sounds like the ignition switch has gone kaput. The ignition switch come in two pieces, an electrical switch and a mechanical switch.

The switch electrical portion can be replaced separatly from the mechanical portion (tumbler that the key engages). It is not a real difficult repair but requires some mechanical knowlege of how the column is assembled.

This can be verified with electrical test equipment prior to buying a new electrical switch.

How do i replace a ignition switch for a 1992 mercury sable

The ignition switch on Mercury Sable is integrated into the ignition cylinder. When this switch fails, you may need to purchase a special switch from a Ford dealership if the switch used a wireless transponder.

Instructions for NON Functional Cylinder (Cylinder will Not Turn or No Keys ):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. Using locking pliers, twist the cylinder cap until it separates from the lock cylinder.
4. Using a 3/8 in. (10mm) diameter drill bit, drill down the middle of the ignition lock key slot approximately 13/4 in. (44mm) until the lock cylinder releases from its breakaway base. Remove the lock cylinder and drill shavings from the lock cylinder housing.
5. Remove the retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator. Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from the casting.
6. Inspect the lock cylinder housing for damage from the removal operation. If the housing is damaged, it must be replaced.

To install:
1. Replace the lock cylinder housing, if damaged.
2. Install the actuator and ignition switch.
3. Install the trim and electrical parts.
4. Install the ignition lock cylinder.
5. Install the steering wheel.
6. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the lock cylinder operation.

Instructions for Functional Cylinder ( Cylinder will Turn with Key):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
3. Using a 1/8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column.

To install:
1. Install the lock cylinder by turning it to the RUN position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing. Make sure the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder housing.
2. Rotate the lock cylinder using the lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
3. Connect the negative battery cable.

Door Lock:
When a lock cylinder must be replaced, replace both sides as a set to avoid carrying an extra set of keys.
1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield.
2. Remove the clip attaching the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder.
3. Pry the lock cylinder out of the slot in the door.

To install:
1. Work the lock cylinder assembly into the outer door panel.
2. Install the cylinder retainer into the slot and push the retainer onto the lock cylinder.
3. Connect the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder and install the clip. Lock and unlock the door to check for proper operation.
4. Install the watershield and door trim panel

Hope this helps.

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1999 Cougar . ISSUE: The ignition key may be difficult to insert or remove and/or key chimes may sound with the ignition key removed and driver's door open on some vehicles. This may be caused by internal design characteristics in the ignition lock cylinder increasing insertion/removal efforts which may allow the lock cylinder to stick.
ACTION: Install a revised ignition lock cylinder. The revised ignition lock cylinder should reduce the possibility of high insertion/removal efforts and ensure proper chime function. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Verify customer concern.
  2. Observe the ignition lock cylinder as the key is removed. If the lock cylinder snaps outward to the non-depressed position and the chimes stop sounding, continue to Step 3. If it does not snap outward, replace the ignition lock cylinder with the appropriate cylinder by referring to the Parts Block in this article.
  3. Insert and remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder. If binding or high efforts are encountered, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  4. From the Parts Block, select a lock cylinder with a part number suffix identical to the center character of the key code of the vehicle. The suffix must match the center key code character to maintain a single key system.
  5. Install the replacement lock cylinder, by referring to the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 or the 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 211-04.
