Just started to pull away from a stop in 1st and

Just started to pull away from a stop in 1st gear and heard a loud clunk. Manual transmission no longer connected to engine. No fluids or other outward signs; engine revs fine. Not clutch cable, because I can shift into any gear and feel like it is in gear - just no connection to engine. Something in the clutch linkage ? Any advice appreciated.

    Typo - 1998.
Pedal goes down and springs back, but has no effect.
Car was running fine until this - no warning, shifted fine in all gears.

Sounds as though your input shaft broke, this would cause a loud clunk, cause it to feel as though in gear, and cause no pull.

2005 Corolla's manual trasmission shifts gears, it clunks

hi mate , sounds like the SPIGOT bearing its a little bearing that allows the gearbox to be at a different seed than the engine flywheel and if this is in bad condition it will take the gearbox front shaft to a higher speed than comfortable for gearshift , in the meantime when you go for 1st or reverse gear just engage a gear like 4th without taking your foot off the clutch and then go for 1st or reverse, this will stop the gearbox spining long enough for a smooth shif, oNLY USE THIS METHOD WHILE STaTIONARY and see a professional when you get time.
