I have a '97 F150 4.6 and it uses oil. I can't see it or smell it but the oil level drops between changes. Where is it going? Do I need to change oil types? I currently use 10W-30, every 3,000 miles and live in MN.

More than one less than 2. Depends on conditions.

  • kheazlett Oct 26, 2009

Are you talking about the "SmokeFix" or the original oil supplement?

  • kheazlett Oct 26, 2009

    U.S. measurement=900ml=1 quart
    1.13L=1 quart

Use no more than 2 quarts between oil changes/3,000 miles.

How much oil do you have to add between changes? If it's one quart, that would be considered normal. If you are adding 4 quarts, there's a problem.

The oil is being burnt up --not enough to be seen or smelled in the exhaust. You could try using a oil stabaliser --called Hyperlube--available at most auto parts stores.--will stop oil burning.

Check under your oil cap and look for any kind of white residue. Have a mechanic run a compression check on each cylinder. Pull your intake hose off of your throttle body and look for oil residue there. Could be a leaking head gasket- or it could just be burning just enough oil not to notice during use.

Use slightly thicker oil,it unfortunately may be burning oil, sometimes high oil cpnsumtion is due to engine wear, especially if its not leaking if it uses under 1 litre, between services thats ok but if its using 1.5 to 2 litres thats an issue

  • Anonymous Oct 26, 2009

you can try that product it does work but its temporary if theres wear it will still burn some oil,how many miles between oil changes?is a quart 250 ml( live in Australia and we use metric )

  • Anonymous Oct 26, 2009

probably too much but try the additives because you probably dont want to rebuild the engine,it probably rings,if the engine blows smoke on start up in the mornings onyl it could be valve stem seals which are easy to do,with the engine still in the car under rocker covers

How to check the automatic gear box oil level ? and how to change it? thanks in advance

Hi Sam, To check fluid level open the bonnet (hood) start the engine and apply parking brake. With your foot pushing hard on the brake, move selector lever from P to R N D 3 2 L and back, waiting for about one or two seconds between shifts and repeat procedure. Select N and check level on stick, making sure that indicated level is between the relevant marks (either hot or cold). Top up through same tube where dip stick is situated. Smell the fluid on the dip stick and if it has a burned smell replace immediately. It would be best to drop the oil pan during this procedure and replace the filter and a new oil pan gasket. To drain box remove the plug under the box and allow old fluid to drain. There are two drain plugs, one for the transfer box and the other for the gear box. Both oils should be replaced once a year. Make sure of using recommended lubricants in both units. Regards Johngee10

White smoke coming out exhaust

well if it is white smoke and smells a little fishy, that is anti-freeze burning up so your head gasket mostlikely needs to be replace. but if it is a blueish white smoke that is oil being burn and that mean that you need to change your oil. if you have been changing you oil normally and it is giving you that then that means your pistion rings are worren. if you don't want to replace them you could put a heavier oil in like if normally you use 10w-30 you could put in 20w-50 in and that should help. worren pistion rings allow excess oil to get into the pistion chamber and that is why it burns it up, This should also be noticed by you oil level dropping faster then normal too.

I got a transmission that doesnt go forward or backwards i check the oil level is ok it doesnt smell burn either the conector to the transmission controler has power to it i use a snap on scaner to check...

With the car off, check the level of the trans fluid, then start the car, and check it again to see if the level has dropped. This will indicate whether or not it is pumping fluid. If there is no change in the level, then you have an internal mechanical failure. If the level does change, you need to check your front halfshafts to be sure they are ok, it either axle is broken, car most likely will not hold in park. If the level checks ok, and the axles check ok, unplug the transmission, this will override the electronics internally, and put the trans in failsafe mode, if it moves then, you def have an internal failure.

VW Golf 2001, V4 Oil tank is empty approxi after 2000 miles

Because your car is consuming so much oil, you need to check the level often, so the level won't go down more than one quart. You will get an idea how long you can drive the car before it is down one quart, and should keep the level at the full mark. You should change the oil filter, as it is still collecting contaminants.
Have you checked the spark plugs condition? It seems the oil consumption will result in the plugs being fouled soon . Keep that oil level up, or the result will be a seized engine. Also, I'm guessing the tail pipe shows black residue, another sign of high oil consumption. This is probably why someone sold this car, they didn't want to deal with an expensive repair of an engine rebuild. You are correct, an oil change should be done every 3k miles.

97 wrangler oil pressure drops when engine is at idle

check the engine oil level... you could possibly need to replace the oil pump soon... if you do not live in a cold climate i would consider using 30 or 50 weight oil. do NOT use that in a cold climate as the oil is like molasses when it gets cold.
that's only temporary. one other thing to consider is a clogged oil filter... when was the last time it was changed ?
