I have a 2008 Sonata and I wondered about the same thing. As it turns out, what looks like an open Fuel Door Indicator on the Instrument Panel is not that at all. When you look at the Icon you will notice an arrow pointing in the direction of the driver's side. The light is simply a reminder that the Fuel Door is on that side of the car.
