I have a 1998 Dodge Avenger 6cyl Coupe, 143,000 miles on it. I recently had the oil changed. After that event, my Service Engine Light is blinking and the car runs rough when idling. Any thoughts?

Do you have a check engine light on and maybe blinking when it sputters?

It states your PCM needs reprogrammed with the error code you are receiving P06DE. Was a pretty common problem back then.

May be low oil, low oil pressure (faulty oil pump) or a bad pressure switch. When your at highway speeds the pump, pumps faster & brings the oil to the right PSI. Try a thicker oil than called for, get the oil pressure checked,oil leaks? & get the switch ckd out.

I'm not sure where you got your alternator tested, but recently I was in the same situation with my 1998 avenger and the alternator was at fault

When was the last time the Transmission Fluid and Filter were changed? More than 35,000 miles = Fluid and Filter change.
Is there any leaks what so ever? This will affect shifting.
Have the Transmission Sensors been removed, cleaned/inspected and reinstalled? These Sensors are "magnets" and catch little metal particles that inhibit their functions, including shifting.
What is the condition and level of the Transmission Fluid. Make sure you smell the Fluid. If it smells burnt, then change it immediately. Make sure you check the level when the engine is at normal temperature and while the engine is running, with the gear in Park or Neutral (with the Parking Brake ON!).
Does this Transmission have a Solenoid (electronic shifting)? If so have you checked the electronic connections for corrosion or oxidation?
Don't spend $2,000 (or more) dollars when the rest of these combined cost less than $200 dollars!

The check engine light may or may not have anything to do with your oil change. Take your vehicle back to the shop that performed the oil change and have them check the code. Maybe something was disconnected during the oil change, but most likely the cause is unrelated.

Hold down the "trip" and "trip reset" buttons at the same time when the service engine light comes on. The service engine light comes on between 5000 and 8000 miles as an oil change reminder, however you have to reset it manually.

Don't worry about the oil pressure light, they key was on, the engine was running and suddenly stalled, the system saw it as low oil pressure on a running engine situation and warned U, it is not the cause of the stall, the stall is most likely related to the following.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
