"!" means any of your light(head light or brake light or tail light) has burnt out.
Brake with a circle means please check the brake fluid level and brake pads for wear and tear.

A yellow light stays on on instriment panel, no book to tell me what it is for

yellow light (check engine) (fuel) (abs) (e brake) these are the most common. Check engine usually looks like a little engine, fuel light is usually beside your fuel gauge, abs light usual is a circle and the ebrake light could be just a light

My brake light stays on even though my ebrake is down? what is my car telling me?

Depends on car. But pretty much the same for most. The brake light can come on if the fluid is low in the master cylinder. Either from a leak or you need to change brakes. or the emergency brake switch is bad.

Headlights never turn off when running. p.brake will not turn off

are the dash lights on as well? if they are, there is a problem with the ambient light sensor (armor all'ing the dash can damage the sensor). if they are not on, its just the daytime running lights. they will only be off if you set the e brake BEFORE you start the truck. once the ebrake is back off, the lights will stay on.

2000 VW Jetta E-Brake Light indicator beeps when brake is off

I fixed mine!! First check your ebrake switch by starting your vw and putting the ebrake on. If your daytime running lights stay on when the ebrake is engaged, its NOT the switch. Stay with me here. Turn vw off and pull fuse number 5. Mine was blown, but the legend only shows a pic of a book with an exclamation point. Meaning the book will tell you what it is, BUT IT DOESN'T . I replaced the 7.5 amp fuse and voila, victory. If it is not number 5, pull every fuse one at a time and inspect them closely. Do not assume, check each one. That is how I found mine after I bought and replaced the $10 switch. Running lights stay on because the switch is not being acknowledged, not because it is bad. I searched every forum I could find on this and there were no answers to this problem anywhere. So I am posting so there is an answer out there. What put me on the right track was the running lights staying on when the ebrake was engaged after I put in the new switch.
