remove the black 'engine cover' is 4 x nuts/bolts, one in each corner. the oil filter is at the back right side looking into the engine bay. you need a special oil filter removal tool if you can't remove the filter cover by hand.
the filter is either under the exhause in the front, just infront of the oil pan, or it could be under the plastic cover on top of the engine in a housing that would an internal filter.
either diesel
or petrol engine, oil filter housing is fitted left front of engine above the
power steering pump, if you remove front section top of engine cover you
can see the black color cap fitted on to the filter housing, filter is
in it, you must have a right tool for remove filter cap,
It is located on the top of you engine compartment, under the hood, to
the right (Driver Side) of the engine and left of your battery. You need
to take off the plastic engine cover (two bolts and four screw nuts) to
expose it. It is cylinder in shape with a black plastic cap, which
screws off to show the oil filter. The filter is different than your
normal one, it doesn't have a outside metal cover to it. It looks like a
air filter but round. Also in the box with your new oil filter comes
two "O" rings, one small and one big. The big one replaces the "O" ring
at the top of the screw part of your black cap and the small one goes on
the bottom of the same cap.
Is this a diesel? I just changed my oil and oil filter. You have to remove the plastic engine top cover first and you will see the oil filter in the front right. Black with hex nut on top (my 1 1/4 AF socket fitted). You have to disconnect the bracket holding some wiring. Pull the wiring forward to access the nut on top of the filter. Undo and remove/replace filter. Under the car you will find a small hatch in the underside plastic cover held in place by three 10 mm bolts. Remove this to access the 19 mm drain plug. Drain old oil and refill with 4 ltrs 5/30 fully synthetic. Top up if necessary after running engine but DO NOT overfill. The fuel filter is on the bulkhead at the back of the engine on the right side. I wont be changing that for a while!
Hi
see my previous post "oil filters" which basically the same as this
there is a special tool for removing the oil filter "plastic cover " - (a 14 flute 76mm cap type) & this is a "must have " or the cover can be damaged 17mm spanner/socket, 6 mm allen key for the drain in filter housing along with the new filter cartrdge you should also get the 2 "o" rings as well. there is website that Robert Aitchision hs put up which gives a complete description of how to do it with pics & what is needed.

HI,
The oil filter is a canister type filter on the top of the engine. You need to pop off the engine cover and you will see the filter cap in the front of the engine. To take it off I would suggest using the special Mercedes filter removal tool. If this is not an option you could use large pliers. Just be careful as this cap is plastic.
The N54 engine takes 7 quarts of oil with every oil change. But you shouldnt have to worry about that in the US because BMW covers all maintinace for the fist 4years or 50k miles. its not that hard to do though if you do need to perform it yourself.
