SOURCE: how to replace front wheel

I can tell you on a 93 Altima that you have remove the entire wheel knuckle and press it out from the rear. Yeah, the knuckle, remove the strut tower bolts, drive train ( which can be lighty pressed out ), caliper and bracket, and remove the ball joint. There's a snap ring at the back of the wheel knuckle that holds the bearing, then press it out with a socket and a table vice or something to that effect. By the way the going commercial rate if you take it to a shop and have them do it starts at $150 for labor. Worth it, oh yeah.

SOURCE: changing the cv joints in 89 honda crx

No you do not need to remove the motor. You will need to remove the driveshaft from the gearbox (driver side) so you may need to drain the gearbox oil. Passenger side has an intermediate shaft and the drive shaft can be split without removing from the gearbox.

One the shaft is off remove the outer boot and nock the old CV joint off with a hammer and somthing to take the impact without damaging the joint (incase its re-useable). I used the rubber end of a screwdriver on the joint and hit the metal end of the driver with a hammer.

If the CV joint boot you have recieved is not the strechy type you will need to slide it onto the shaft prior to installing the new joint.

To install the new joint can be a chew. There is a circlip seated in a groove on the outer splines of the driveshaft. This clip is slightly larger than the groove it sits in must be "negotiated" into the groove while you slide the new cv joint over (Use a flathead screwdriver to prize the circlip in as you push the new CV joint onto the shaft.) Once you get this right the CV joint will slide down and the circlip will make an audiable click and pop out of the groove on the inside of the joint holding the join in place.

Pack the joint with the grease provided. Slide the boot over and fasten the boot in place with the metal straps and put your car back together.

Beware of new Circlips - my old one was mishapen so I used the new one provided and it was massive in comparison. It took me and a friend a good hour and a half just to get the new CV joint over the circlip - patience is a virtue :D

Incase you can get the shafts out....

Best way is to split the bottom ball joint and suspension wishbone. I'm not a massive fan of this as bottom ball joints have caused me too many issues. I split the tom ball joint and the tracking rod end to give enough movement to get the driveshafts out.

Also never pull on the driveshaft its self as this can pull apart the inner joint inside its boot which is a real faff on to get back together (trust me). Use a screwdriver or small crow bar to prize the shaft out at the gearbox end.

you have to replace bearing and hub as a unit.you have to remove remove brakes and caliper rotor set them aside dont disconnect brake line. get a piece of clothes rack wire to hold brake caliper .do not let it hang by brake hose. you got to remove hub nut. best way to do that is loosen it a litttle while tire still on weight of car keep wheel from turning .

SOURCE: 1992 Toyota Corolla CV Joint

You can pick up an entire re manufactured axle assembly at your local auto parts store. In order to replace the assembly you will need to disconnect the tie rod end and the ball joint. Remove the spindle nut. Push the axle stub out of the hub. Now with a suitable container under the axle to catch spilled fluid pry the axle from the transmission housing. Install is the reverse of removal. For more detailed instructions and diagrams go to www.autozone.com vehicle repair guides.

What is the correct name for the front drive shaft after the two CV joints that houses a spider assy slide joint/coupling on one end and the engine drive train?

That is just the end of the CV axle. There is a boot that keeps it mounted to the spider bearings. When you buy the axle, it will come with this part attached. The bearing may be optional though.

Noise when turning forward

Hard to say exactly without doing a visual inspection. However, clicking noise when making turns is usually CV joints.
Other possibilities ball joints and wheel bearings
(would have to do an inspection to determine which is it)

When driving around corners the front end makes a wroubbling sound. on the straigth aways the sound gone. is it the CV joints? wheel bearings? U joints? or what should I be looking for? 98 Ford Escort zx2...

Does it happen turning in both direrctions? It could be cv joints. from a standstill, turn the wheel hard to the right and accelerate in a circle. do the same on a left turn. If you hear a clicking sound, it's bad cv joints. inspect the rubber boot for tears & stress cracks. once the grease escapes, the joint is no good

CV joint questions

well now,,,il tell you a storie,,,better sit down?
the cv joints are the joints in a drive train that for use of a better word "bend the drive shaft" so it dont brake when you turn a corner,,,ie:parking! inside the cv joint is held on the drive shaft be some splines in the drive shaft and a spring clip holds it all together there is an "inner bell" it has normaly 5 slots in it that have big "ball bearings" in them that slid around up and down these slots on the out side of the cv joint is the outer "bell" this also has slots that the ball bearings fit into so the drive trough the cv is compleat,,,when you turn the wheels the cv joints slids round on these ball bearings twisting round but the drive from the engine is still transmited to the road wheeles trough the cv
when this cv joint starts to were out the ball bearings are pitted and not ball shaped any more and the slots they run in are not smooth that to gets pitted what happens is the cv starts to "crack" under load,,,and vibrate when turning or being driven you drive down the road at 50 mph and the car feels like its driving over stones in the road its vidrating off the cv joint then when you turn the wheel on full lock to pull away you here a very big cracking or clicking sound, like,,,,,click click click, and the more power you put on the more they click very soon people start turning around and look at you? oh yes they here it to!
the vibration that comes off the cv will reck the transmission becouse of the wipping of the drive shafts,,,, to test your cv joints to see if there good or bad one's put the car on full lock and pull away,, if there is a cracking sound or a klicking sound there shot away and you need new ones fitted
now then,,,storie over,,, its time for sleepy sleeps

When I turn there is a grating sound, both left and right turns--doesn't happen at low low speeds or on very easy turns. 2003 honda civic

It sounds like the CV joints need some attention. These are covered with rubber boots and if the boots crack they let in water and/or dirt which cause the joints to make a popping or grinding sound. Turn the wheels left or right and look under the car towards the inside of the wheels. The boots are right next to the back of the wheels. Look for cracks in the rubber. If you can, push on the boots and check for small cracks. If they are cracked, have them looked at immediately. The longer they go like that the more damage will be caused. Thanks for using fixya.

Changing a CV joint

CV boot and CV joints are different. Boot covers the joint which protects it from debris and other harmful things. if your boots are cracked then just change them. pretty cheep to do yourself. but if you look at the joints and there is dirt on them then you have a problem. i have that same thing and its fine for me unless i turn on the 4W. then you hear a clicking noise. eventually if you keep going like that your car will stop moving. you can look to buy new cv halfshafts. for a good price go to pep boys. best deal i've found anywhere
