Perhaps oil has leaked onto the exhaust manifold.
Check the oil pressure also.
Oil LeakOil leak, probably valve cover gaskets need replacing or just tightening. Also if it started suddenly after an oil change, the filter may be leaking, or you spilled oil on the manifold.
This MY & others had problems with both the cranshaft oil seal. The rear one leaks onto the exhaust and can make a horrible burning oil smell, notably when you stop after a long drive.
Head Gasket
Outbacks up to 2001 have issues with head gaskets, its a widespread problem. If the smoke is white and smells sweet it is coolant leaking into the pistons via a head gasket. Replace the head gasket before it fails. If you blow the head gasket it will ruin the engine.
Cam Seals
It is most likely the cam seals dripping small amounts of oil onto to the bottom of the engine block. When the engine warms up, it will burn the oil off.
Engine smoking most common with high miles cars, some has better luck that others and again it also depending on the owners on how have they took care of the vehicle by doing every 3k oil change and was the car been driven hard or normal. The problems may lies with piston rings are worn or valves is not closing properly. First check all spark plugs making sure you getting all good sparks and coil working properly. Next have an engine compression test done, this will determine if you have a blow by either from a worned piston rings or bad valves. with this two issue, the engine will burn oil and smoke allot. with the worn piston rings, not much you can do but have engine rebuilt. Bad valves will have to redo the heads. By the time you invest the money to have repair done parts and labor, you might be better off getting a used motor from ebay or junkyard. getting complete repair estimate will allow you to make that decision depending on your budget. with the engine not running correctly, the computer will sense it and the light on the dash will light up to let you know and need to be inspected.
