I think you mean you have the Check Engine warning light displaying once you have started the engine.
If this warning light is displaying when driving the car there is an irregularity with the engine operation.
You need to take the car to the dealer or other competent service business so they can hook up a scan tool to the vehicle and see what fault codes the computer is generating and what other irregularities are apparent with the engine operation.
Don't delay getting it checked out or the onboard computer could send the vehicle into "limp mode" as an engine safeguard measure if the problem gets worse.
There are multiple causes(dozens) for a CE warning to display and it needs to be properly diagnosed so the correct repair can be undertaken. Even relatively small and easier to repair problems can still cause a CE warning to display such as a vacuum leak or the failure of a sensor unit. So get it checked out ASAP.
1. The battery warning. This is indicative of a weak battery and if your battery is 3 years old or more I would replace it.
2. If you have a weak battery this can trigger other warning lights in the vehicle, typically the ABS warning but sometimes other warning lights as well depending on the electronic features in the car. If you replace the battery this should correct the battery warning and most likely the ABS warning if both of these warnings appeared at the same time.
Normally, once the ABS warning is displayed the anti lock braking system(ABS) will be shut down. Whilst your braking will be normal, if you brake too hard and lock up your wheels on a slippery road there is no ABS assist to prevent the brake lock up which you have when the system is working.
3. If the alternator on the engine is not generating sufficient power and thus not charging the battery at all, or very little, you will likely get a battery warning light. I don't know if your 1999 vehicle has a warning light to indicate a faulty alternator or not.
4. Check Engine Light.
You suggested the CE warning has been showing up for a few days and before the battery and ABS warnings popped up.
The CE warning can be caused by dozens of different engine issues.
The vehicle needs to be scanned with the appropriate scan tool to see what fault codes the onboard computer is generating because if you have a CE warning light there will be fault codes generated 99% of the time.
Once these fault codes have been pulled the mechanic can start to diagnose the cause of the problem or problems. Each engine fault code your car's computer is generating can be caused by different types of problems so it is important that they diagnose the issues correctly. Otherwise your Check Engine light will remain on as long as the causes are not identified and fixed.
In most vehicle, Transmission warning light incorporated in Check Engine light (ie, when you pull check engine light codes, transmission trouble code will be among it, if there were any), other case, its in your PRNDL indicator light (ie. PRNDL light will blink when transmission has problem), and in another case, you need to have a special scaner that capable of pulling transmission trouble code. I hope it helps :)
Hi Mark
the problem that you have is not caused by hardware, it is a software bug, know fixes and bulletin mentioned it clearly.
you need to arrange for appointment to the dealer for software update. GOOD LUCK
YOU CANT RESET ENGINE WARNING LIGHT UNTIL YOU CODE SCAN FIX THE PROBLEM.BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE A BAD SENSOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL STAY ON.ONCE YOU REPLACE THE BAD SENSOR YOU NEED A CODE SCANNER TO ERASE TURN OFF CHECK ENGINE LIGHT.
came on because of a problem as to which problem there are 100s of codes first check and make sure gas cap is on securely if good then have car scanned most auto stores such as auto zone/advanced auto[check ur local area] offer this service for free the trouble code will give u the area and or component that needs repair or replacement
You can disconnect your battery for 15 minutes or pull the fuse for an ECM or PCM fuse, but the best way is to visit any local repair shop. Most shops will have a universal Check Engine Light Code Reader that can quickly and safely reset check engine light trouble codes. It should take about 30 seconds. Ask your local service center if they could reset the check engine light with a Check Engine Light Code Reader.
Start by checking your brake switch to see if there's a malfunction Then check your wiring and connectors. Then if all is good. You may need to check your PCM
On your particular vehicle, you should be able to pinpoint your problem rather easily. Locate your diagnostic port underneath your dash. Once your located your diagnostic port, use a paper clip as a "jumper" between the two terminals on the top, right-hand side of your diagnostic port. once you have the paper clip in plac, turn your ignitiong to the "On" position, NOTE: MAKE SURE NOT TO TURN THE IGNITION TO THE "START" POSITION WHILE DIAGNOSTIC PORT IS BEING JUMPED. Upon turning the key to the "On" position, you should be able to could the number of times the check engine light blinks.
The code(s) stored in memory may be read through counting the
flashes of the dashboard warning lamp. The dash warning lamp should
begin to flash Code 12. The code will display as one flash, a pause and
two flashes. Code 12 is not a fault code. It is used as a system
acknowledgment or handshake code; its presence indicates that the ECM
can communicate as requested. Code 12 is used to begin every diagnostic
sequence. Some vehicles also use Code 12 after all diagnostic codes
have been sent.
After Code 12 has been transmitted 3 times, the
fault codes, if any, will each be transmitted 3 times. The codes are
stored and transmitted in numeric order from lowest to highest.
