Question about 2001 Dodge Caravan

2001 Dodge Caravan Transmission Question.

I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan SE with 2.4L 4 cylinder Motor. I need to know what transmission is in this van.
I think it is a 3 speed but I am unsure.
Can anyone confirm this?
Also I know it takes Mopar ATF +4 but anyone know how many quarts of tranny fluid it takes?

my van is a front wheel drive (2 wheel drive).
The transmission only hold 4 quarts? I heard you flush the transmission replace filter and gasket and then replace the fluid with up to 4 quarts then start the van let it run, shift it through the gears and then you need to add more.

awesome thanks. Another thing I needed to know was: The transmission fluid level should be checked with the engine running, for a proper read right?
Or should the motor be off?
I know many cars are different, some require the motor running, some require the motor not running.
I just like to do things myself and do them the right way.
The van was my fathers and he passed away in june, so Id like to take care of it the best way possible without spending hundreds of dollars at a mechanic or dealership.

IF your van is front wheel drive only, the transmission is indeed a 3 speed A413. If your van is all wheel drive, your transmission is a 4 speed A604. Capacity is 4 quarts or so.

You are correct...I had trouble with my 'puter yesterday and didn't get the chance to finish my solution for you. What I was trying to say before my computer crashed (hard) was, "Capacity is 4 quarts or so, at first...the procedure is to put 4 quarts of ATF +4 then start the engine and let it warm up...once it warms up, WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE, shift the transmission through all gears...shut the engine off and check the level again...it is most likely to not show up on the dipstick. Add a half quart to the transmission and check the level again...repeat this procedure until fluid registers on the dipstick...the overall capacity is between 8 and 9 quarts.

The transmission fluid can be checked either way, with the motor running and the shifter in neutral or when the motor is warm but turned off. Personally, when I change tranny fluid, I first add 4 quarts then do what I showed you (warming up the engine and shifting through all the gears)...and then checking the dipstick...after that I go 1/2 quart, check, 1/2 quart, etc. until the fluid level is satisfactory on the dipstick.

When I am just checking the fluid level, like just before a long road trip, I will start the engine and let it warm up, set my parking brake (AND a wheel blocked!), put the vehicle in neutral and check the fluid level on the dipstick.

I'm happy to help, hope you have good luck!

Not good if it makes a grinding noise. Needs a tech or replacement as something most likely has come loose inside the transmission.

I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan SE 2.4L 4 cylinder motor. I had the transmission flushed almost 2 years ago and since then have put 12,000 plus miles on it. All I know is you are suppost to check the...

You need to, at the minimum, change the fluid & trans filter. Easy proceedure. With van jacked up & blocked so it won't fall, use a large collection tray under trans pan & remove pan bolts. let oil drain into tray. use screwdriver to pry pan off. clean pan thoroughly & trans matting surface. Remove filter. You may need to adjust low rev band. Check with dealer or parts store for proper clearances. Put new filter on & tighten bolt[s]. Use new gasket & rebolt pan. Use gasket sealer on pan side only. You'll need 4-8 qts. of the proper tranny oil. Fill through trans. filler hole. Start engine & let warm up, check level & don't overfill or you'll have to suction out until level.
