Follow steering coloumn into engine compartment, have someone turn steering wheel with front wheels off the ground(jack up car)
Look to see what is turning and what is not.
Power steering pumps begin to make a loud whirring noise when you turn the wheel. As long as you have fluid and the power steering is working there is no damage occurring. But either gets worse it is time to change the power steering pump.
As for the belt if it is serpentine style. (Long and makes many turns) then the belt is fine. If it is the V-belt style (old style) only on 2-3 pulleys max then just make sure it feels snug.
Check the belt tension before you do anything. Most of the time, this is the issue. Second could be just a badly worn belt. Simple and lest expensive things to start with.
Hi, it could be a wheel bearing. if you turn left and you hear it it will be your right front bearing and visa-versa. could be the power steering belt that needs replacing, good luck with it.
Bearing going out on alt, power steering, AC, ect. put a long screw driver to your ear them the sharp end on each unit to listen for the sounds it makes.
If it gets worse when turning the wheel at a stop, then it's the power steering pump. Could be the power steering fluid also. Check your belts for wear or damage. The idle pulley will make a constant noise, sometimes whining sometime screeching. To check idler pulley it is best to remove belts.
I don't know if this will work, but if it is the same whinning sound that I have heard, all it takes is to buy some belt dressing and spray on the belts and pullys.
