Sounds like either the starter or starter solenoid. With the key in the "On" position try using one side (either positive or negative) of a pair of jumper cables. Locate the starter solenoid and clip one lead to the battery side of the solenoid, and just quickly touch the other lead to the other side of the solenoid. If the starter engages, replace the solenoid. If not, carefully check the positive cable from the battery to the solenoid for cracks, exposed wire, corrosion and good, tight connection. Good luck.
Solenoid contacts are stuck in contact, not releasing and keeping current on the starter motor in the engaged position. Try turning off the engine, and tapping the starter motor soleniod with a piece of wood or soft hammer.
First replace the starter solenoid on the firewall,it is where the positive battery cable goes too,it is most likely the problem,be sure the battery is not low,and the alternator is charging correctly, low voltage can cause this, but most likely the solenoid.
question is did it stay engaged before you changed it or not. If it didn't then it sound like you have a faulty starter. this happens even with new ones
The starter relay on the fender is the most common cause of this condition. ,It is on passenger side feder in the engine compartment, it is round and the positive cable of the battery goes to it,
If the flywheel teeth are ok, it must not be engaging w/ the flywheel as u say. If u pull the starter out u can check w/ jumper cables, ground to starter body (flange for good clamping) and touch positive where pos. battery cable attaches, gear should travel to end of shaft and spin to engage flywheel, if it's not advancing to end of shaft, u need to return it for another rebuilt unit. Note, only touch positive cable briefly, the gear should engage w/great force, so be careful.
Just to clarify, I also have an 86 F150 standard exhibiting what sounds like the same problem. On my unit, power is still applied to the starter motor with the switch turned off. I'm reasonably sure that there is not a shorted wire. ????Is the starter switch on F150's spring loaded or solidly controlled by a rod????? I am suspecting that it is spring loaded and the old grease and dirt is causing the switch to stick in the engaged position. Thanks for any help. Bob C
