Have you received any failure codes (check engine light)? If you have, find out what they are by going to any parts store and they can read your failure codes for free. Let me know after that.

SOURCE: Chevrolet Suburban 4 Wheel Drive Indicator Lights

Just serviced my own 4x4 Suburban, by buying a 2nd hand encoder motor and replaced the old one, which was trashed by the winter salt. The device is prone to failure since it's made of alluminium and water has an easy time of entering the unit and trashing it.

CAUTION: Abbreviated gratuitous information of how an encoder motor was serviced. If unqualified to deal with repair, seek professional service.
CAUTION: Read at one's own risk.

To replace it, you need to crawl under the vehicle and remove the front drive shaft;

Disconnect the electric harness to the encoder motor, followed by unbolting it.

Take replacement encoder motor and install. There may be an issue with aligning the cogged cam of the transfer case to the encoder motor. If so, the vehicle's 4 wheels will need to be raised off the ground. The engine started, transmission in Park, and using a Vice-Grip® wrench gently rotate cam clockwise approximately 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch, then while set in this position, stop engine. Now attempt to align and attach the encoder motor.

After successfully attaching new encoder motor, attach its wiring loom.
Test vehicle.

SOURCE: My 1999 chevy silverado 1500 four wheel drive

You probably have a bad encoder motor. It is located on the side of the transfer case on the drivers side.It is black. The other problem they had with these was the switch but you have already replaced this so your next thing is the encoder motor.Hope this helps.Good luck.

My 2005 avalanche will not engage into four wheel low

Try shifting the shift selector into Neutral first then try engaging 4wd low. If that doesn't work try shifting into 1st gear and then try engaging 4wd low. The information is inside your owners manual but if this doesn't work please let me know. Also is the light on for which mode your truck is in (2wd or 4wd high)? If not, you may want to check for a blown fuse.

I don't have the owners manual, and have never owned a 4x4 in the past, as stupid as this sounds i don't know the proper procedure to engage 4 wheel drill hi

you have a lever or switch that engages 2wheel normal driving 4 wheel high for wet slippery conditions ,then you have four wheel low for real muddy and deep snow conditions
normally change from 2 wheel to four wheel high on the move .important nearly all 4 wheel drive vehicles must be stopped to engage low otherwise do damage to transmission

Pulling code's from the 4X4 control module would point to a diagnostic procedure . Do you own a professional type scan tool that can read DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's in the 4X4 control module ? Autozone , advance etc.... can not read these code's .
Which transfercase does it have ?
Transfer Case - BW 4482-NR4
Transfer Case - NVG 246-NP8

How many buttons for 4X4 three or four ?
The BW 4482 transfer case features a 3-button shift control switch located on the instrument panel
The NVG 246 EAU transfer case features a 4 button shift control switch located on the instrument panel
When the ignition key is in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module monitors the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/range position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position will begin flashing to inform the driver that the transfer case shift control module has received the request for a new mode/range position. The lamp will continue to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/range position has been reached, or has been engaged. Once the new mode/range position is fully active, the switch indicator lamp for the new position will remain ON constantly. The 4X4 system with four button shift control can set a number of DTC'S

I have an 04 chevy 1500 the four wheel drive is acting up the auto 4wd work fine. When I put it in 4 hi or 4 low it does not work? What the hell!

This truck has been known for the 4wd switch to go bad and also the electric motor on the transfercase to go bad. Sometimes you can just unhook the battery for a few minutes and the computer will reset the system and it will work fine. Try this first.

Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . Service 4X4 light's blinking . DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored in the 4X4 control module.

4 wheel drive wont swich back to 2 wheel drive

For a temporary fix so the car can drive, remove the fuse for the four wheel drive. it won't actuate the four wheel. The car is always in 2wheel drive. the fuse is located under the hood, the very right side of the of the fuse box, the third fuse up from the bottom. This can be checked in the owners manual. When I need four wheel dr I place the fuse back in. I haven't fixed the problem yet but can drive it 2wheel on the road. think it is the control module for the four wheel dr located under the dash board behind the glove box. Dealer part for $450, I would rather install and remove a 10cent fuse
