One of the symptoms of a bad alternator is the battery light to come on so maybe you should check your alternator .
Also check fuse for the alternator, under the hood should be #26 a 30a.
The battery light should light up when the battery is not charged by the car after startup. That is my understanding of it. If you are not comfortable about trying to fix it, have someone take a look at it. On my fathers old car we had the same situation, battery was never charged and died soon after.
CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR BATTERY IS BEING CHARGED BY YOUR ALTERNATOR BY CHECKING WITH A VHMO METER ON THE BATTERY WITH THE CAR RUNNING. YOU SHOULD HAVE 13.5 TO 14 V. IF YOU DON'T YOU WILL HAVE A BAD ALTERNATOR
