If the bolt is hitting the frame rail or the motor mount the only thing you can do is put a floor jack under the engine to hole it and take the motor mount out and raise or lower the engine to remove bolt

Replace 1997 Buick Riviera Supercharged Water Pump

Thought it would not be too bad looking at it. Loosen the idler and remove the serpentine belt (You can just move it off to the side to get it out of the way). You will have to take the 2 bolts out that hold the power steering pump and move it off to the side to get to some of the water-pump bolts. The Water-pump bolts are accessible but you will run into one snaffu. You will get the bolts loose, but I ran into one that wouldn't come out because brackets were in the way (Got the son of a gun out of the block but couldn't get the water-pump out) . I decided that I would not tear half the engine apart to get the last bolt out. It was one toward the front of the engine. I decided since the old water-pump was no good, I would use a pry bar and bend the bolt until I could remove it. The Water-pump housing cracked but I didn't care (it was garbage anyway). Now I had to figure out what to do about replacing the bolt. I grabbed some 5/16 threaded rod, a flat washer and 2 nuts. Measure the threaded rod in the bolt hole of the new Water-pump and make sure that you have enough thread to go into the block. The rule of thumb is at least one and a half times the diameter of the bolt. So if the bolt is 5/16 you want it to go into the block somewhere between 7/16 and 1/2". Install the new water-pump. When you get it in and get to that last bolt, double nut the end of the threaded rod,put the washer on, smear the threaded rod with sealant since it goes into the water jacket, and make sure it goes into the block enough to tighten it down. I have had the new water pump on the car for over a year with no problems. The car has close to 160,000 miles on it. I don't expect that this car will need another water-pump for the rest of its life but if it does, It will not be too bad to replace.

How do I loosen or remove Ideler pulley with star bolt head?

put a socket on the middle bolt of idiler pull and either tighten/orloosen will move the idiler pulley out of the way. then have another ratchet ready to get your other bolt off... might be easier to just take out that bolt on idiler pull and that will remove the pulley to?? your choice ! Richie

How do i remove water pump on 1998 buick riviera .I have al the bolts detached minus the one wih the pully in front of it that butts up against the motor mount

u must jack up the car underneath the oil pan to support the engines weight. Then remove the motor mount. Then you can remove the last two bolts on the water pump. There are two holes in the bracket that is bolted to your engine block. These holes allow u access to the last two water pump bolts. If you loosen the upper bolt of the bracket itself u can swing it forward to get to the bolts on the water pump more easily. Do not completely remove the bracket! It's a tight space, but you'll extend the repair time if you remove the bracket versus swnging it forward.

How to replace a water pump in a 1989 buick riviera (how difficult is this?)

Not too bad. Loosen water pump pulley bolts then remove belt. Remove pulley and remove all of the pump bolts.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1995 buick riviera

Place Jack under engine with wood to hold it up. Remove uper engine mount(leave loose in engine compartment. Loosen pulley bolts. Remove belts. Remove alternator bolts and lift out of the way for easy access to power steering bolts. Remove 2 power steering bolts using access holes in pulley. You should be able to accessall of the water pump bolts now by moving things out of the way as you go. The two larger bolts toward the radiator can be accessed through the two holes in the motor mount ( you will need a short socket on a 1/4" drive rachet). You should be able to get the pump off now. Installation is much easier than removal.

Water pump r&r on a 95 buick riviera supercharged.

No. Unfortunately for us 3800 owners, GM decided to put a bolt in that hole instead of a stud with a nut on the end. Yes, you are going to have to take off the motor mount along with the idler pulley bracket. Just make sure you don't put a cheap-o part on and you won't have to do it for another 15 years.

Water pump removal on a 1996 Buick Riviera (supercharged)

there are two bolts that hold the power steering pump in place that are accesable through the holes in the pulley. If you use a 6" extension and a 1/2" socket you can reach them. this will allow the pump to be removed and hang by the hoses and be out of the way. I was told also to inspect the cam sensor while it is apart because you have to remove the water pump in order to get to it.
