Hello rgates53: My name is Roger And I will answer your question. The crank position sensor is located on the right side of the harmonic balancer. The repair manual refers to dropping the A/C compressor out of the way. Just take the bolts out to gain access needed. Remove 10mm. bolt to remove sensor. See attached picture. Should you need further help please just ask. Thank You for using Fix Ya. RogerWhere is crankshaft sensor located on the 02 - 44d050a.jpg

Ok this is either a shorted wire or bad connector or just plain a bad 02 sensor or a stuck injector or bad PCV needs cleaned. You stated it runs great i would go with Bad 02 sensor first or check for possible exhaust leak and last check for bad converter.

That year Explorer was notorius for rear ABS sensors going bad. If your ABS light is on as well this may be your problem. Also they were notorious for 4WD modules going bad. This problem is more expensive. I would advise you to have it checked on a computer to see what codes you have.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.
