Most radios and cd players in cars require a code to get them operating again after they have been disconnected from the battery for an extended time. Hopefully a dealer could help you locate the code for that model.
Some fault code is stored in the PCM (computer); to know what is the problem, I suggest scanned the PCM with some scanner reader codes. Autozone or AutoShop with this tools sometimes make this for free.

there is no code available for 2000 Cavalier. the radio is programmed to the BCM. you will need a GM tech II to calibrate the radio. If your radio is locked is because of a problem with the car or the radio has been installed from another car.
