I have a 1988 mazda 626 turbo 5 speed and it is stuck in 5th gear. the shifter moves around but doesn't change any gears and doesn't feel like it moves into any gears. When i got the car it shifted fine. It started when i down shifted to 4th on the highway and i barely got it into 5th. It worked for awhile but felt sloppy and hard to find the 1st 3rd and 5th gears with the 2nd and 4th barely staying in gear. Eventually it got stuck in 2nd while in town so i moved to the side of the road to check my linkage and somehow messing with it i got it into 5th.

With the engine off, it pretty much takes the clutch out of the equation. If it will not come out of gear with the engine off, I would look to the shifter or the transmission itself.
check the drain plug magnet for metal bits. Mostly you can remove the rear extension housing with out removing the gear box and you will find a small gear on the cluster shaft ( bottom shaft) and a larger gear on the out put shaft ( tail shaft) . Check that the shifter fork is actually moving the larger gear or gear dog into 5th gear (Fork loose on selector rail) or check that there are still teeth on the smaller gear as excessive high speed under load will rear out the teeth
old car. 5th gear? is this M/T? 1987 ? A/T? is 4speed
what does stopped working mean . 1: shifter fails to select 5 gear H pattern slot. 2: grinds? 3: cant force it to 5th with clutch depressed.? is free play at spec? 4: raise front wheels off ground, can you get in to 5th now? keyout and running? 5: can you get into 5th parked engine off, and select 5th and then start car in 5th with clutch depresses first step. then slowly very slowly attempt to move car starting in 5th, but dont finish, just feel the gear, feel that its there and not neutral.
check clutch for slipping condition, mayb due to worn clutch disc or a oil contaminated disc or a weak pressure plate not locking disc to flywheel therefore giving u a slipping condition and higher than normal rpms
You're 5th gear syncro has just gone out. It keeps your shift forks and slider gear from popping off. It also makes it possible to shift the gear in. It's going to take a rebuild of the transmission to fix this problem.
