Tie rods and the Rack and Pinion are all the same battle. Blood, sweat, tears and swearing followed by exhaustion. You will need a ball joint removal tool and a 1/2 inch breaker bar and socket set as well as a big hammer. You can go smaller but probably won't work or you will break it. You will need to replace the ball joints as well. The removal tool looks like a tuning fork and you use it to pry the ball joints out by inserting it and pounding the wedge in until it pops loos. There is a left and a right as well as an upper and lower so make sure you have them marked before starting. Removing the parts is going to be your challenge. Make sure when you replace the tie rods that you have them at exactly the same extension as the old ones. This controls your alignment. I do it myself but you may have to take this in for alignment once you have replaced all the parts.
You shouldn't need the alignment tool taking it apart the new Tootsie new alignment tool should come with a new clutch that's when you will need the alignment tool
You can do it yourself. but here are a few things to remember. When doing this kind of a job at home, you are working with jacks and stands, you are on your back and there are special tools that are needed to make sure that things go back together properly and to the right torque. You are also messing around with the alignment and balancing of the tires, so you are going to need to get your car balanced and aligned. If I where you I would let someone who already has the tools and the experience to get the job done, if your mechanic is charging to much hunt around, a lot of tire shops will do the job for you also.
If the door wont line up correctly, is most likely due to bad hinge pins. Open door try to raise up on outside of door near bottom. If it has play hinge pins need to be replaced.
Are you asking how to do this HERE? You'd be better to get at least a Haynes manual for your Lumina. They explain how to do it, torque values, etc.
You need the manual, a big hammer, and a pickle fork (ball joint removing tool.) If you can find an ol' fart that knows about cars to explain, that'll help, too.
Expect busted knuckles, you'll get 'em. Be sure to have the car aligned after you replace the ball joints & consider doing the tie rod ends at the same time.
Take it to a wheel alignment place since it will have to aligned anyway after it is put on. You will need a special tool to remove it from spindle anyway.
you have to buy the tool from a auto parts store and its very easy to fix the problem just try doing it at night so you can see where they are on the road e.i. not to close but not to far!!! up down.
