If the car jumps off and doesnt stay running then check altenater first! Altenaters power a car not the battery. Battery starts the car and powers the car only when its not running.

Alternator is probably trash

  • Anonymous Oct 12, 2009

Sorry about the short answer.... for some reason the whole first part of my message to you was deleted.

1.) Clean battery posts and post clamps with a terminal cleaner or wire brush.

a.) jump start again and see if that was the problem.

2.) If that didn't do it then clean the connections to the alternator and tighten bolts (with the ignition off)

    a.) jump start

3.) you might have to take the battery to a parts store and have it checked for a dead cell.

4.) if all that fails then you might have a bad alternator.

    Thanks and Good Luck,

Car runs fine but at times it will die and have to boost to start

Sounds like alternator/generator could be bad and also battery could be bad.

My car starts only when boosted

Measure the voltage across the car battery with a volt meter with the alternator running .. It needs to read 13.4 volts or higher to charge the battery.

2006 Chevy Cobalt power dying with new battery in it, is it the starter?

If the car died while you where driving it, it sounds like it is the alternator. Did it start right up or did you have to boost it? If you had to boost it to start it again,I would say it is the alt., but if it started right away w/o a boost, it is something else.

2002 saab 9-3 turbo car starts and runs when driving during acceleration turbo boost shoots to the red and car shuts down P0300 random misfire what can I do.

by the sound of it you could have one or both of these problems.
1. a vacuum leak which is causing the car to over boost.
2. ignition fault which is causing the car to die.

1. look in the engine bay and look for small rubber hoses, check all you can find and look for cracks or splits. make sure you check the small rubber hose on the turbo itself.

2. you may have a faulty spark plug, coil pack, HT lead (depending on which engine you have)

1 is probably your boost problem
2 is your cutting out problem
i hope this helps

Turbo cuts out under normal driving

That sounds like turbo overboost, ECU cutting the boost off. when you try and boost again feels like your hitting a brickwall, or when it happends feels like your hitting a brick wall...turning the car off resolves this.

Reset your ecu, disconnect the battery for 30seconds - 1minute.

Driving down road car will loose all electrical, start cutting out, shift into low gear & die. After boosting car seams to be charging just fine. I have had in the shop many times for this - can't find...

My car would die on me without warning, it seemed to be the transmission. My dashboard would light up and and the car would cut off. When I pull over to the side of the road the car start up fine but will not go into gear (will not pull).

I'm on my 3rd transmission I hope the problem been solved now.

Are you close to any Mitsubishi dealership? They can look at it and give you an estimate.

Starts with boost then car dies after 1 km and won't start

once the car is started it runs off the alternator .. so even if your battery is bad the alternator will still run the car .. so it looks lilke your alternator is bad .. when you jumped the car you charged the battery a little but not enough to keep it going since the alternator is not charging . if you hook up a charger overnight then you might be able to run it long enough to get somewhere (garage) .. try to drive when you dont need lights .. those will run down the battery in a short time .. if you have a volt meter then the battery should read about 13.8 to 14.2 volts when the alternator is working properly (car running) .. if it reads lower (like 12volts or less) then the alternator is not charging .. some auto parts stores will test your system free ..

My car sometimes wont start and when it does it cuts out and dies

Put a voltmeter on battery. It should say something like 12 volts. Start motor and see if you have about 14.5 volts while running. If not your charging system has failed.
