Check the axles and the axle that go from the tran to the front wheel drive box,had the same problem, removed the axle from the trans to the front gear box an noise stoped.
I have the same problem with my 1997 mountaineer and my mechanic told me it was the rear differential.
He said he could fix it for $800 but the car isnt worth much more than that so he told me i could drive it for another 25k miled like it is.
Have you raised it up in the front and checked it out.

Yes I raised it, but I'm not quite sure what to look for. both driver and passenger side looked the same with one exception, a thin vertical metal rod (to the left of everything else) with thick blue rubber rings at both top and bottom was just about missing the bottom ring of rubber. it was there, but almost worn completely off. it was perfectly in place on the passenger side.

The rear differential is in the front of the car?? Well, anyway, turns out my new neighbor is a mechanic and it was the front driver side wheel bearing (inside the piece with the lugnut screws on it). Sorry not a mechanic so that is the only way I know how to explain it. We replaced it and the noise is gone!!!
