Assuming it is an automatic transmission, I would look into that first. Check the fluid level. Low fluid level will cause hesitation. If your fluid level is ok consider changing the transmission fluid and transmission filter. Saturn's have an external filter, so it's very easy to do.
Sounds more like the transmission is slipping.check fluid make sure it doesn't look black or look like blood.or when you pull out the dip stick for the transmission the fluid doesn't smell burnt.if any one of these .take it to a tray shop.to get checked.
Start it up to warm it up, check tranny fluid in park or neutral, if low, put more in. Hope it is junk though. If not low, you never know. I'd runit till it breaks and keep putting in fluid if needed.
As a first course of action I strongly suggest that you check the transmission fluid. If it's burnt please have it replaced. If the fluid looks fine then the problem will surely be on the torque converter. The torque converter controls the shifting of the car. Once replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
I assume you have check the fluid level to ensure there is enough fluid... If not, do that first. Problems with the transmission not shifting is generally related to fluid pressure not getting where it needs to go when it needs to go there. That could mean low fluid or a bad solenoid in the transmission responsible for controling that gear. If you checked the fluid and it's still not operating correctly, that's beyond our help. Take it to a transmission shop. Good luck.
Pull your transmission dip stick smell the fluid,if it smells nasty and burnt, have your transmission serviced.
The tool for all automatic transmissions is CLEAN TRANSMISSION FLUID!
Not a good sign. Check your transmission fluid. Make sure that vehicle is running at the same time. thats how you check transmission fluid. if its low, add fluid, check and make sure which kind to add so you dont add wrong kind. if that dont work, then your gonna have to probably end up buying another transmission or having that one rebuilt. feel free to write back
First of all, too much fluid WILL NOT harm your trans. I am not sure what you mean by "hesitation" but if a delay into gear, or a slip is a better description then adding fluid is not going to fix it. Your trans is known as an A4LD and though they were quite durable for their size, like everything else mechanical, they don't last forever. First of all, check the fluid. Not just the level, but the condition. Is it brown or even black? Does it smell burnt? If you answered yes to either, then you likely need an overhaul. If the fluid is still red, or pink, then you may have a faulty modulator or vacuum source to it, or the governor may be sticking. My 20 plus years of overhauling these units tells me that when you added the new fluid, the detergents in it went to work flushing out debris from where it had rested for years, then sent it directly to the governor. And once the governor stuck, the trans quit shifting. Sorry, but it sounds as though you need an overhaul.
May not be this but please look at the transmission fluid level. Seems like I ran into that before and it was low (only left turns caused fluid in pan to swish over missing the pickup tube.) Fluid needs to be checked after vehicle driven a few miles. and pull the dipstick with it running in park. Hope I helped. Thanks.
When was the last time you had a trans flush ? Sounds like you could use one. Trans fluid breaks down and doesnt work as well as i did when it was new. There are also sensors that tell it when to change gears could also be a sensor. I would start with a trans flush if it were my car. always try the least expensive first. then if u still have the problem look into calling a trusted transservice and ask them if the have any experiance in Volvo trans. if not fluid my bet is on a sensor in the transmission. Good luck and hope this helps ya.
