Probably the belt for the pullys inside are worn, if you can get replacement ones they are easy to fit, just open the case and slip the old one off and new one on.(may have to remove an internal cover also)
The tape player is either dirty, or there is a bad capacitor in the main control board that is faulty. Both are very common. You can try and blow out the player with a can of compressed air. If cleaning doesn't work, then it will most likely have to be replaced or pulled apart and find the bad capacitor
There are tape player cassette cleaners that you insert into the opening. Operate them a few seconds; and, theoretically, they clean off the heads.
That being said, I have not noticed much difference after using one of these.
