1. The plastic gear inside may have broken. Replacement kits are available.
2. Check the floater and the sensor above the fuel tank. Wire harness may be the culprit.

Have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . The speedo information comes from the PCM - engine computer . There is a VSS - vehicle speed sensor , which is an input to the PCM . May have a code stored that will point you in the right direction . Most all parts stores will do this for free . How does the truck drive , run , shift etc...?
Yeah They unplugged it. Inside the dash. Used car dealerships do this. They don't want you to know the true mileage. That's my first guess. The other is a chip died inside of it. I worked there. I refused to do it and show someone how to do it. I tell all my employers.. Don't send the customer to me, I will not lie for you.
My 04 Ford Focus the battery light keeps coming on & going off, have fitted a new alternator belt but it didn't solve the problem. The battery connections are good. Also the rev counter, speedo & mileage clock keep going haywire when the battery light is on. Do you think it is the alternator? Or is it some other common problem?
Had this problem on mine & the main dealer were stumped. Eventually found it myself after a lot of pocking about.Have a look at the wiring loom in the engine compartment. Looking under the bonnet look closely on the right hand side of the engine above the gearbox where the wiring loom passes from the rear of the engine over a metal bracket/support to the front. The loom has a tendancy to rub against the bracket and eventually damage the cables within. You will have to remove the air filter canistor & a few air hoses to get to the bracket. Good luck!
It sounds like it needs to be recalibrated. With the key out of the ignition, push in the trip mileage counter for 5 seconds. You should get a reading in the mileage counter which is the computer software version (such as sho2.3). Release the counter and you should see all the instruments and lights go through a self-diagnosis. After this stops, it the needle should go back to 0.
