Reseting the codes on your car will clear flags that your car has to complete again and until it does shifting may be hard or sloppy you may increase your fuel mileage as the computer has to learn all over how you drive. And if you need help and you go to someone who does have a scanner you will have lost some soft codes that standard OBDII scanners will not pick up making you spen money for troubleshooting that they can't find or make it much harder to find. Also some states it's against the laww to clear codes due to emmison laws and can be fined up to $10.000 per incidence. Ant the auto parts store will scan your computer but WILL not clear codes becasue they can be held liable.

Sadly, you cannot reset the car's computer by yourself unless you have a certain hand-held computer. Fortunately, every auto parts store has one and will clear the codes for you for free. They will plug it into your OBD input and configure some settings, restarting your car's computer, clearing the codes.

Hello Sir, First I will recommend that not to go for reset. Resetting is easy but it will cause further problems. Check Engine Light on this car usually means that the fault is in the Emission Controls. Also this can be caused if there persists a fault in the O2 Sensor or in the Catalytic Converter. But nothing I can suggest until you give us the Fault Code. CEL ( Check Engine Light ) doesn't come on on its own, it is accompanied with a Fault Code which gets encoded into the Computer. Try Scanning the Computer with a OBD2 Scanner and retrieve the Fault Code. Then we can diagnose the Problem and give appropriate solution.
Kindly get it scanned and reply us.
But on your point, to reset CEL, you need to unplug the Battery and keep it unplugged for 5 Min and get it plugged. This will completely reset the Code in the Computer.
NOTE:-------------- Don't try to reset it. Only reset it if you are sure that the Computer doesn't have any Fault Codes. If you reset it without getting the Code, the Code will be erased and will never be retrieved for Diagnosis. This will make repairing impossible.
Thank you Sir, Have a nice day.

The check engine light is on my 1995 Saab 900s. I can not find a techician with the correct scanner. How can I turn off the light?

There are three ways to reset a check engine light.

1. Disconnect the battery, wait approximately 30 minutes, reconnect the battery. This resets the cars computer which also reset the check engine light. On newer OBD (on-board diagnostic) compliant vehicles this usually does not work. See step 2.

2. Reset using an OBD II reader. When you hook an OBD II code reader up to your vehicle, you can reset the computer using the code reader.

3. Fixing the problem. Generally the check engine light comes on for a reason. Usually it is emission related (sensors, gas cap) or electrical (faulty wiring). In this case the way to reset the check engine light is to fix the problem

Check engine light is on but it needed an oil change and i got one but the light hasnt gone off, how do i reset it?

The check engine light does not refer to oil changes, this is for emmision and fuel management as well as a diagnostic tool for other engine components. The only wasy to clear this is to have the dealer clear them or repair what ever is causing the light. It will however clear it self after about 20 times of starting the car and the computer not seing any more bad scans from what ever caused the light to come on in the first place. You can have Auto Zone pull the codes from your car and tell you what caused the light to come on in the first place. To clear the aoil change light turn the key on and press the gas pedal 3 times all the way to the floor without the engine running.

Lost gas cap and check engine light came on. got new gas cap but light won't go off.

Sometimes for this light to turn off you will need to reset the computer system that logged the code. Advance Auto and Auto Zone have a free service that will do this for you, they will also be able to tell you if the check engine light has logged a code for some other then the gas cap. Just go into Advance Auto or Auto Zone and say "Could you reset my check engine light for me?" they will grab their scanner tool and ask you to lead them to your vehicle, they will need to turn your car to the ON position but not start it.

You need an OBDII scan tool. Most auto parts stores will check it and reset it for free.

you will need to drive about 50 miles till the computer checks the system since it was reset. Your check engine light may come back again, if it does run a vacum test..

''Check Engine Soon'' light Stays On.

Must have engine computer scanned to get codes and determine cause of check engine light. Low tire light probably needs reset. Open passenger door and remove panel on side of dash. Reset switch should be located in that compartment.
