You should have two "wires" going to the starter. One (bigger cable) will have positive voltage all of the time. The other (smaller) will have positive voltage only while the key is turned to "start." If you have both of these, your starter is bad.

I have 1992 isuzu pup truck.sometimes i turn the key to crank it and there is nothing noise wize,no clicking nothing.the dash lights come on,battery is good.i turn the key another time and it cranks r

you need an ignition switch. One way to figure it out is to turn the key to engage the starter, quickly........over and over, the "catch and start" will happen with no change and suddenly, its engaged. Or, keep the key in the START position, don't let up on it and hit the steering column with your fist, or the steering wheel. It may just be shorting out.

Good battery, key will not engage starter, jumping starter will not engage drive

jumping across the solenoid will spin the starter but will not engage the pinion in the ring gear. Have a load test done on the battery as I suspect that there is a bad cell and you are not getting a full charge. If the battery is faulty then there is always enough power to turn on dash lights but nothing left to run the high current solenoid and starter.

My 2002 navigator wont star. it makes a sort of thump sound but nothing else. i know my battery and alternator are good. help me

The alternator would not matter until after the engine starts.
If you think the starter is making the noise, see if you can turn the crank with the serpentine belt to make sure the engine is not locked up.
Then check the starter for voltage and ground. The battery could have a dead cell and still have 12 volts but not have enough power to engage the starter.

I bought a brand new starter and new battery in the last 7 days. When I try to start my car, the engine does not engage, instead, all I get is a loud rapid clicking noise. Does anyone know what it mig

I guess I will start by saying we can only guess because we are not there in person.
My first question would be, where is the noise coming from ?
If it is the starter, you could have missing teeth on the flywheel and nothing for the starter to engage.
Depending on the make model and year, if you have a starter relay other than the one on the starter it could be faulty.
As long as you have 12 volts and a couple hundred amps of power at the starter post, and a good ground, the starter should turn. If the neutral safety switch was faulty you would get nothing when you turn the key. And the alternator would not come into play until after the engine starts.
Can you turn the engine by hand ?
Can you jump the starter with a screwdriver or jumper wire and make it turn ?

Car wont start..turning the ignition and it wont make any noise at all, absolutely nothing. not even a click. power comes on though. any ideas?

Extremely low voltage from battery. If you are under 9 or 10 volts you can power anything in the car but it isn't enough to engage the starter. Before you buy a battery try cleaning the connection sometimes thats all it takes.

Won't start getting nothing when i turn key

Recheck all your connections, battery. starter, look for fuseable link on small wire going to starter. Might want to chk.that wire with test light when key switch is in start position and see if it lights. If it does not light might be starter switch under dash on steering colume.

1992 honda accord wagon lx 4cyl. battery good all lights, radio work when i turn the key on but when i try to start nothing, no noise nothing, can u help?

It's probably the starter or cable to the starter. If you can get to it check it with a voltmeter while someone turns the key to engage the starter motor. If you have 12volts DC and it doesn't turn it is the starter.Good luck...
