Did you have the same problem before you changed the starter? Did you use penetrant that may have dripped onto the exhaust system? I believe you earlier posted a question about a smoky engine.
Burning oil produces a very distinctive blue-grey smoke often accompanied by a sort of burned eggs smell in advanced cases.
White smoke is either steam from an internal coolant leak or can be unburned fuel in some cases.
Dark grey - black smoke is invariably partly burned fuel. Engines produce black smoke when either there is a small excess of fuel entering the cylinders or the fuel is being delivered in a form that makes it impossible to burn completely - Poor injector spray patterns, for instance.
Lots of people reckon bad injectors have no effect on starting but in my experience they have a lot of effect. Push starting produces a higher piston speed that tends to overcome problems like bad injectors or low compression from worn valves, pistons, rings, bores, etc.
I suggest you remove the injectors for testing/overhaul and ensure the battery and starter are in absolutely top condition for a good cranking speed, also ensure the new glow plugs are receiving current and the relay is working OK.
Yes, it could be the starter. It also could be the battery. I've replaced the battery three times in my 20 year old car, but the original starter is still fine. I'd have the battery checked before I replace the starter.
In another car, I had symptoms like bad starter, but in that car, the starter was really expensive, and on a hunch, I had the charging system tested. The "new" battery was defective, saving me hundreds when I didn't need to replace the starter.
1.Probably the battery to starter thick wire is loose, jointed, under sized (too thin to hold the heavy starter current) or shorted to ground.
2. Main ground wire from battery to engine is loose or aged.
3. Improper connection between the battery and chassis ground.
4. Starter motor defective.
Check:
- Battery (Specific Gravity and cells test)
- Alternator.
- Starter.
- Battery to starter motor wire (thick white in color).
- Battery to alternator wire (thick white in color).
- ECM ground wires attached at engine.
- TDC sensor.
white smoke could be steam from condensation in the exhaust or maybe valves? check your ignition timing maybe the black smoke caused by the car running to rich.
You very likely have coolant entering the cylinders of the engine, you need the head pulled off and checked for cracks and if ok the head machined flat and replaced
Sounds like not all the glow plugs are working.It should run fairly smooth on a cold start if all of the glow plugs are working..Also you shouldn't drive off on a cold start with a diesel,Its really hard on the motors..At least give them 10 to 15 min on a cold start..The oil in them is a really thick oil and when there drove on a cold start theres no oil lubricating the internal parts and will cause the motor to seize up..You may already no this and dont mean you drive it as soon as you start it i just wanted to let you know..When you get alot of white smoke it could be two things,Theres water in the fuel which will make it not have much power die and smoke..But if it runs fine when its warm theres some bad glow plugs...Hope this helps you and have a great day
Imagine the white smoke is unburnt diesel. Anybody standing in the middle of it will be able to tell you soon enough.
Most likely culprit is that one or two of the glow plugs aren't getting hot enough. Usually just that the plugs need replacing, but worth checking first that the busbar which runs between them all is getting +12V at the appropriate stage of the process.
